Pseudotropheus zebra
SYN: Tilapia zebra
PD: The Zebra Cichlid has a "typical" mbuna shape.

Mbuna thrive in really crowded conditions, for example 15-20 adult fish in a benchmark 170 L is not too many, as long as you have really good filtration and do plenty of water changes to keep nitrates to under 25 ppm.

Size of tank: Most Mbuna grow to around 8 to 9 inches as a result, you have to plan for when they become full adults and reach their normal length.
Water chemistry: As I mentioned before, the pH value of the water of these lakes is alkaline.

The Trewavasae Cichlid is an Mbuna type Cichlid that has interesting coloration and habits. These active fish can liven up an aquarium with their fast movements and beautiful hues, though care should be taken when combining them with other fish.

common name: Trewavas mbuna - red chilumba
Family: Cichlidae
Continent of origin: Africa
Origin country:
Size: under 14 cm (5.51 inch)
Minimal tank volume: 300 litre (79 US gal) ...

Like many other Mbuna species, there is sexual dimorphism in P. zebra. The anal fins of males have several colored "egg spots" surrounded by a clear margin. Females have no such spots.

Mbuna - Accepts flakes, pellets and live foods.
Platy - Accepts all types of foods, but needs lots of vegetable matter.

Mbunas: Common name for rock-dwelling African Cichlids from Lake Malawi.

Compatability: Mbuna are boisterous, fast-moving flashy cichlids. They are best kept with cichlids of similar disposition, although Synodontis catfishes, Cyprichromis and certain other rock-dwelling cichlids seem to do quite well with them.

Has been seen to cope well in semi-aggressive set-ups, even with African Mbuna Cichlids!
[edit] Diet
When young will eat algae.

Breeding occurs as for many mbuna. The Male will select a spawning site, it could be on a piece of Slate or on the bare bottom. He will flirt with all the females until one responds and follows him.

Most notable for requiring vegetables are the plecos (South American algae eating catfishes), silver dollars (vegetarian relatives of the piranha), and mbuna (rock-dwelling cichlids from Lake Malawi, Africa).

Malawi Eyebiters are generally characterised as Ukata, open-water dwelling fish, rather than Mbuna, rock-dwelling cichlids from Lake Malawi.

Yellow Labs, like other Mbuna should be kept with multiple females to each male. A 1M/2-3F ratio is fine. Male Labs are mean little wife beaters and left in a pair, the male will often "love" the female to death.

Haplochromine: Both a genus of Cichlids as well as an informal group of Cichlids that are generically (although not precisely) described as a non-Mbuna flock because many of these fish once belonged to the broad genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf.

It is speculated that the OB Peacock Cichlid originated from a cross between an Aulonocara nyassae and a species of female mbuna. This cross was initiated in captivity, and the beautiful hybrid OB Peacock was the result.

Mbuna from Lake Malawi will do fine as long as they all are around the same size.
The young are very easy to care for.
Water quality is very important for the adults.

I have seen these fish thrive in tanks with Mbuna. Mine, at pH 7.5 hardness 110ppm, are growing and doing well. I keep the temperature at around 74 - 76°F (unheated tank). I suspect that anything between 72 and 80°F is fine.

The group this Pseudotropheus auratus belongs to is the Mbuna and they can be found around the rocky shorelines of the lake. Tanks should afford them ample rocks among a large community due to their competitiveness.

Good tank mates should be other mbuna but try to avoid other short bodied Zebra species. Also Labidochromis Caeruleus are not recommened, because of crossbreeding may occur. This fish like's the bottom to mid area's of the tank.

It does not have notable stripes like other varieties of this genus and species. Pseudotropheus zebra is a Mbuna Cichlid, and is also called the Zebra Cichlid, Tilapia Zebra, and the False Zebra Mbuna.

They have slightly different requirements compared to other Mbuna cichlids, and one of the most important things to watch out for is to provide them with proper hideouts! ...

Generally the Red Jewls will accept peacock cichlids, same sized mbunas, or haplochromis African cichlids. They are very aggressive towards New World Cichlids such as a Green Terror, Smaller Dwarf Cichlids, Jack Dempseys, etc.

The general characteristics of aquariums for Mbunas from Lake Malawi are roughly similar.
