The silver dollar (Metynnis argenteus) is a tropical fish belonging to the Characidae family which is closely related to pirahna and pacú.

Native to South America: Area south of the lower Amazon. In weedy side arms of the river; popular aquarium fish in the USA.

Metynnis argenteus is the most commonly seen species for sale, and can sometimes be distinguished from other species by small dots on their sides. Males have a longer anal fin, tinged in red on the front.
