The Midas Cichlid requires a tank of 50 gallons or more, with plenty of room to swim as well as stones for hiding. Because it is a digger, it is best to put the rocks on the bottom of the tank and not stacked.

This is purported to be a hybrid between the red devil, Veija labiatum or perhaps the midas cichlid V. citrinellum and the severum Heros severus, however the origins of this fish have not been revealed.

The Red Devil is very similar to Midas Cichlid Amphilophus citrinellum, and some sites still list them as the same fish. These two fish differ very little in the appearance however they are found in different places.

citrinellus, the Midas Cichlid. A. labiatus has a narrower head and a smaller nuchal hump than A. citrinellus. To make it more confusing, there are also hybrids of these two species. Most tank-raised specimens are A. labiatus.

Contrary to some reports, the Red Devil Cichlid (Cichlasoma Amphilophus Labiatum) is a different subspecies than the Midas Cichlid (Cichlasoma Amphilophus Citrinellum).

The Red Devil is often referred to as the Midas Cichlid and the Red Devil Cichlid. The Red Devil's main background color is peach to yellow with some specimens having a white underside. The fins are often white or highlighted in white.

citrinellus is often sold under the trade name of midas cichlid or red devil. Colouration in wild stocks is variable and while most specimens are grey to olive brown some pink, yellow or orange specimens do occur. A.

Ron Coleman, a local researcher, has conducted experiments (I believe with Midas cichlids) and verified that they have strong temperature preferences for spawning.

Examples include a number of cichlid, such as the oscar, Jack Dempsey, jewelfish, convict cichlid, Midas cichlid, and spotted tilapia; and livebearers, such as swordtails, platies and mollies, and armored catfishes.
