This large mouthbrooder, 13 cm (TL), occurs in Banka. The species obtained its name from the Latin words chloro; meaning green and pharynx; meaning throat: green throat.
"Mouthbrooder" was first introduced into the English speaking hobby by Dr. Uwe Roemer in the October issue of the 2000 ACA Buntbarsche Bulletin as A.sp."Brustband"-(Breastband).

Due to a technicality with scientific naming conventions, there is still some debate as to whether Maylandia or Metriaclima is the valid name for this genus.
Mouthbrooders actually keep their eggs in their mouths until the eggs hatch. The eggs are again laid a few at a time, and once the male fertilizes them, the parent doing the mouthbrooding gathers them up in his/her mouth.
