Why mouthbrooding and what exactly is mouthbrooding?
First, we need to know what mouthbrooding is and why many wild Bettas use it as a breeding strategy.

 


Mouthbrooding is an advantage for the hobbyist, too. He immediately knows when a female is "carrying" and all he has to do is to net it and place it in a tank of its own - if he wishes to raise the whole brood.

Mouthbrooding is not only found in females in cichlids. Some species are female mouthbrooders, others are biparental mouthbrooders and a few are male mouthbrooders.

A mouthbrooding Mbuna, but one that differs from the 'typical' Mbuna protocol in that a male and female will form a well-defined pair, in a manner analogous to Central American Cichlids. Male and female co-operate in defence of their chosen territory.

Comments: "Beira Gold" is a very beautiful semi-dwarf Mouthbrooding Cichlid from the tropical rivers of Southern Africa. It is very closely related to the more familiar Eqyptian Mouthbrooder.

The "Mouthbrooding Apistogramma" or Apistogramma "Maulbruter" has been recently described as Apistogramma barlowi. to honor the late George Barlow. This species has been in the hobby for a number of years and has just been formally described.

Parental care falls into one of three categories: mouthbrooders, substrate brooders, and delayed mouthbrooding where the eggs are laid in the open or in a cave, and subsequently brooded in the mouth(s) of the parents.

Look for the Mouthbrooding Betta - Betta pugnax, the Licorice Gourami - Parosphromenus deissneri, the Spike-Tailed Paradise Fish - Pseudosphromenus cupanus, the Croaking Gourami - Trichopsis vittatus, and the Dwarf Croaking Gourami - T.

They breed like other mouthbrooding Mbunas and the females are very good at holding their young. Mbunas spawn in the male's territory.

He gives an excellent presentation on tanganyikans in general and mouthbrooding tanganyikans in specific like Tropheus and Frontosa. He also strips the fry and eggs from mouthbrooding females.

Description: Geophagus steindachneri is a rarity- a mouthbrooding South American cichlid. Originally typed by Eigenmann and Hildebrand in 1910, it is native to the Rio Magdalena in Columbia and the Maracaibo basin in Venezuela.

Personally, I have kept mouthbrooding bettas for a short time. These fish are notorious for being jumpers and I have lost fish to this behaviour. Keep a tight lid! They are quite peaceful in comparison to the much more common B.

Some of which are: Betta splendens (Siamese Fighter), Betta picta (Java Fighter), Betta pugnax (Penang Mouthbrooding Fighter), Betta bellica (Striped Fighter), and Betta imbelis (no common name). B. bellica and B.

Paedophore: A type of fish that specializes in robbing the eggs or larvae from mouthbrooding cichlids. They accomplish this by sucking them out from the mother's mouth.

The eggs are again laid a few at a time, and once the male fertilizes them, the parent doing the mouthbrooding gathers them up in his/her mouth. That parent eats sparingly, if at all, until the baby fish are released.

These mouthbrooding carnivores have paired barbels on the end of the lower jaw. All Asian arowanas are distinguished from Australian congenerics S. jardinii and S.

The common name of 'Cuckoo' derives from this catfishes habit of swimming between spawning cichlids, eating their eggs and depositing their own. The eggs are then picked up by the mouthbrooding female cichlid and the resulting fry raised with her own ...

i didnt even get to see the mouthbrooding. I think my male mouthed the babies but not possitive. So I read they breed a lot with good conditions but geez! at what point would I have too many?

She will enter when she is ready to spawn. She will lay her eggs and the males will begin the fertilization process. As the male is fertilizing them, she picks them up to begin a mouthbrooding session that can last up to a month.

Given that this fish hovers in the water column, looking for food, the jawfish is best fed very small amounts a number of times each day. The jawfish will often spawn in an aquarium, with the male mouthbrooding the babies.

Be sure to use a quality buffer specifically designed for your water type to raise and maintain your aquarium's alkalinity. Fish have different preferences for alkalinity, for example, African mouthbrooding cichlids prefer a dKH of 10-17, ...

Over the course of two weeks, the mouthbrooding duties are evenly shared between the two parents. The fry are held in the front of the mouth, not in the throat sac like many other species.
