Multifasciatus

Aquarium MulmMurray River Rainbowfish

I have two multifasciatus, also called Silver Scat. This interesting fish from New Guinea and parts of New Caledonia is quite the find indeed.

Neolamprologus multifasciatus is a tiny Cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, in the Rift Valley of Africa. These lakes are quite alkaline so all Rift Lake Cichlids have evolved to live in high pH waters.

multifasciatus, similus, gold occelatus and speciousus are all good. I have spawned all those guys as well as the pearly occelatus...aka mellagrus...the later was much more aggressive.

The Silver Scat ( Scatophagus multifasciatus ) from coastalIndia to Tahiti. This species has a silver body color with a silver sheen in reflected light. TheSilver Scat reaches only 4.7" (12 cm) in length.

The three species of the Neolamprologus multifasciatus group are the smallest cichlids of the lake Tanganyika. They live either in colonies or in pairs in the lake and they must be kept the same way in captivity.

This Neolamprologus multifasciatus has foam on its wounds
Fish afflicted by white spot disease (ichthyophthyriasis). Easy to detect - the body is covered with white spots - this disease is very contagious.

multifasciatus, is impossible to mistake for the multi thanks to a few main differences.

The species currently assigned temporarily to Lamprologus include: brevis, callipterus, calliurus, caudopunctatus, finalimas, leloupi (not leleupi!), multifasciatus, ocellatus, ornatipinnis, similis, speciosus, stappersi (meleagris) and wauthioni.

I first became interested in these fish late in 1999, when I saw an article about breeding Neolamprologus Multifasciatus.
