· Nauplius (pl. nauplii) = Gk word used for the larval stage of invertebrate animals (crustaceans)
· Neritic = term related to the shallow (shallower than 200 m) areas or to the organisms occur within these areas ...

This is called the Umbrella stage, during this stage the nauplius completes its development and emerges as a free swimming nauplii.

Nauplius larvae emerge from the egg sac and swim freely. Newly released nauplii have up to four or five small lipid droplets regularly arranged in their body cavity.

Their characteristic most relevant to the aquarist is that their eggs can be stored dry, with their development interrupted, for use later on. Once the eggs are returned to salty water, they hatch rapidly and produce a larva called a nauplius, ...

This increases the nutritional value, removes bacteria, and the final product is much smaller than the hatched nauplius. Artemia is one very few species which totally lack natural defences against predators.
