Nitrate is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite. But it can still kill if high enough.

Nitrogen takes many forms in the ocean,1 one of which is nitrate. Other forms include dinitrogen (N2), ammonia (NH3/NH4+), nitrite (NO2-), and a myriad of nitrogen-containing organic compounds.

Nitrate levels in aquariums need to be controlled as at high levels they compromise the health and well-being of the fish.

Nitrate - a "Barometer" of Tank Health
Not to be confused with nitrite (NO2-), the very toxic ion common in aquariums during the break-in period, nitrate (NO3-) is the final product of fish waste decomposition.

Nitrate
Chemical symbol NO3 - Formed as a result of the breakdown of ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate by bacteria (see nitrification).

Nitrates - Nitrates are the result of Nitrites being broke down even further due to bacteria in your filtration system increasing because of the Nitrogen Cycle.

Nitrate (NO3-)-Measured in mg/l or ppm by using test kits or electronic probes. Nitrate is also produced in an aquarium, mainly by the bacteria Nitrobacter. This occurs in the biological filter.

Nitrites are converted to nitrates during the cycling process. Nitrates are not as toxic as ammonia or nitrites but they are harmful and will stress your fish at high enough levels.

Nitrate: Mildly toxic end product of biological filtration or the aquarium nitrogen cycle. At high levels nitrate can be stressful to fish and other aquatic organisms. In aquariums, it should be kept as low as possible.

Nitrates - Nitrates naturally rise in the aquarium over time, as a byproduct of fish wastes. The only way to remove them is to perform a water change. Make sure your filter is kept clean, and is adequate for your tank size.

Nitrate: A toxin at the end of the nitrogen cycle in your tank. The Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrite: A compound which is intermediate during the Nitrogen Cycle.

Nitrate (NO3) - This is a non-toxic compound in the nitrogen cycle. Although not a critical problem in freshwater tanks, marine tanks should be kept well below 10 ppm.

Nitrate
Nitrate (NO3) is the indicator that many aquarists use to decide when they need to change water. NO3 will gradually rise as a waste product of the nitrifying bacteria that detoxify ammonia and nitrite.

Nitrate: Chemically speaking, it is the molecule NO3, which contains a nitrogen atom, three oxygen atoms and a lone pair of electrons. It is the last stage of the aquarium nitrogen cycle and is converted from nitrites.

nitrate - Mildly toxic end product of biological filtration. Can be used as a gauge to tell when a partial water change is needed.
nitrite - Middle element of the biological cycle.

Nitrate: The final product in the nitrogen cycle (NO3). It is not toxic, but can be dangerous at high levels. Nitrate is created by the oxidation of nitrite by nitrobacteria. In a reef tank, nitrate levels should be kept below 10ppm.

Nitrate concentrations are not just used for themselves. Nitrate is much less toxic short term than its precursors in nitrification, ammonia and nitrite, close to two orders of magnitude less toxic.

Nitrate, as total nitrate. Recommended frequency: once a week. Note that most tests measure in N-NO3 and that to arrive at the total nitrate concentration, the result of that test needs to be multiplied by 4.4

Nitrates do not break down any further by the same type of bacterial action as in the ammonia and nitrites. The effects of nitrates are still not well known and there are different opinions as to how toxic they are.

Nitrate (NO3) Less toxic ammonium compound produced by Nitrobacter bacteria from nitrite. Nitrate levels can be kept to a minimum by regular partial water changes; anaerobic filters convert nitrate back to free nitrogen.

Nitrate:
Nitrate is even less toxic than nitrite, so as you can see, your aquarium is beginning to come around. Once nitrate levels reach their peak, they will start to decline.

Nitrate is harmless except in higher levels (such as above 40 parts per million) which
will promote algae growth in the tank. Even higher levels can result in stress that can
weaken the immune system of the fish and make them susceptible to disease.

Nitrates become toxic to fish (and plants) at levels of 50-300 ppm, depending on the fish species. For fry, however, much lower concentrations become toxic.

nitrates, which are discussed in great length in this FAQ in conjunction with the NITROGEN CYCLE;
phosphates, the second most prominent nutrient. Phosphates have been linked to algae growth.

Nitrate and phosphate control is usually not needed in freshwater aquariums unless the levels become very high, or there is a continual problem with undesireable algae blooms.

High nitrate levels can kill fish. It seems that saltwater aquarists pay more attention to nitrate than do freshwater guys like me. But high nitrate levels in an aquarium can create an "unhealthiness" that is otherwise hard to diagnose.

Although nitrate (residual waste) is relatively harmless, the levels will accumulate and become dangerous if regular partial water changes are not performed to dilute nitrates. Cichlids are large fish that eat a lot, so nitrates accumulate quickly.

Some more nitrate resistant invertebrates might survive. The other thing is you wont be able to pack your tank full of fish either because of these higher waste outputs.

Nitrite/Nitrate Test Kit - (prices vary, under $10.00) Somewhat more important than a pH test kit in a planted aquarium is a nitrate/nitrite test kit. Nitrite is poisonous to fauna and is converted into nitrate by bacteria.

Phosphates and nitrates are excellent sources of food for algae. Algae spores can even enter the aquarium through the air, or with new fish as they're added to the community.

Water testing: Nitrate: 2.5ppm, Calcium 877 ppm!, Alkalinity 2.3 meq/L. Not sure I believe these numbers, will re-test.

Clean water low in nitrates appears to be important to keeping the fish in good health and inducing it to spawn.

In nature, all of the nitrates produced by bacterial nitrification are consumed by plants, algae, other species of bacteria, and other organisms.

You will also need some fish food, and some test kits, at the very least, you need to get a pH test kit, an Ammonia test kit, a Nitrite Test Kit, and a Nitrate Test Kit.

You can use test kits to measure a wide variety of water parameters: pH, hardness, alkalinity, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and even more specialized things like the concentration of copper, oxygen, calcium, etc.

This allows helpful bacteria (which turns ammonia to nitrite and finally to nitrate) to grow. If introduced in too great a number before these bacteria grow, the goldfish will die from breathing in too much of their own untreated excrement.

A technique used to reduce nitrates in saltwater aquaria, a DSB is 4"-6" of very fine grained sand.

Aquariums utilizing under gravel filters tend to run higher nitrate and phosphate levels due to the inefficiency of both the mechanical and biological filtration.

This is because Pineapple Discus are intolerant of high nitrite or nitrate levels. Pineapple Discus should be kept in pairs or small groups, and may be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish.

Cherry shrimp are highly prone to nitrate poisoning and they need good water to maintain good health and molting. I do weekly 30% water changes. I use plain tap water (moderate hardness, PH 7.6) and I treat it with declorinator (Amquel).

The fish is intolerant of poor water quality, including high nitrate levels. Regular partial water changes of 50% weekly plus the plants should achieve stable water parameters.

Besides soft water, which should have low nitrate values, Corydoras caudimaculatus is hard to get to breed. Frequent coldwater/freshwater schocks for a prolonged period may result in succes.

How about nitrite or nitrate poisoning? In ideal conditions, the ammonia released by fishes through respiration and excretion are converted to nitrites (by beneficial bacteria), which are then converted to nitrates (also by beneficial bacteria), ...

Clean water with low nitrate makes caring for this fish very easy. Besides good water quality, C. davidsandsi's needs include some amount of current and a substrate which is not sharp enough to damage the body or barbels.

The second group of nitrifying bacteria to populate are those of Nitrobacter, which convert nitrite to nitrate. This period takes up to approximately twenty-one days, after which nitrite should be almost gone.

Care: The fish require medium sized to large tanks, slightly acidic soft peat filtered water, and very frequent waterchanges, as the fish are very sensitive to nitrate! ...
