Setting up nocturnal aquariums
To establish a nocturnal aquarium you will need to create an environment with many caves and hiding places.

 


Fish who are nocturnal (active at night, such as many catfish) may only eat when the lights are out. They tend to find a hiding spot when there is light and they are able to see movement.

A nocturnal prowler, this fish is popular in pet stores but less popular at home. The knife fish requires many hiding places and if it is happy, you really shouldn't see it at all.

A nocturnal scavenger. Will eat most food after lights our. Can be tempted to eat frozen foods during the day.
Furniture
A large sandy bottom with leaf cover is ideal, fish of all ages will bury in the sand. Larger fish will bury in gravel.

The nocturnal Trinidad Plecostomus is a great candidate for a community aquarium. Usually greenish yellow in color, its patterned fins camouflage it well in a planted tank.

This nocturnal fish lives in muddy water, so it has no real need to use its eyes and has developed a sonar type system to get around. It is relatively peaceful with other fish, but will fight amongst its own species.

Care: Nocturnal species, aggressiv towards other catfish and Synodontis, especiallly if kept in small tanks with little or no hideouts.

A shy, nocturnal fish which tends to remain hidden during the day, often buried in the substrate. A soft substrate and/or bogwood refuges should therefore be provided. This fish may "play dead" if disturbed.

They are nocturnal creatures and usually cruise during the twilight hours. They normally hunt live prey and will try any fish that fits into their mouths.

Though a nocturnal fish, meaning it is active in the evening and during the night, the Red-Finned Loach is peaceful and suitable to keep in a community environment with other peaceful fish.

They are nocturnal animals, and prefer a dimly lit tank, with dense plant life. An ideal home for the Knifefish is a dark PVC tube. They like floating plants, and dark rocky substrates.

This is a nocturnal catfish that has a tendency to hide among rocky formations. Adding these type of formations would be a good idea. Plant formations wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Tiger plec
Nocturnal, shy, dwarf plec that is rarely seen in an aquarium, but does an invaluable job after dark by eating any left-over food and grazing on algae. A little aggressive towards other Tiger plecs, so best kept individually.

Due to their nocturnal nature, they need a place to hide during the day, a piece of pipe or a cave where they can get away from the light.

If you have a nocturnal fish you may want to place a decoration in there for them to hide under. If you plan to keep the lid on it, be sure to poke plenty of holes in it to let air in.

Normally it is nocturnal and crepuscular, although sometimes it can be seen on the ground and can be active during daytime. A very fast and agile predator and a very good climber.
Its voice is a mewing crying.

Aquarium setup: Nocturnal. This species is best kept in a well planted slightly dimmed aquarium. Plants have to be planted in pots otherwise the botia will dig them up. Use hardy plants.

All of them are nocturnal predators, a fact that many a beginner could have used before all of his or her small fish ``mysteriously'' disappeared a few at a time.

A few fish, in particular certain types of catfish and knife fish, are nocturnal predators. That is, they either hide or patiently cruise the aquarium during daylight hours, but hunt incessantly from the moment the lights go out.

Some reports indicate that this species is mostly nocturnal (as are many other species of octopus) while other people report that the species is crepuscular - most active in the lower light levels of dusk and dawn.

The downsides to Catfish are they can get extremely large (over seven feet) and some are nocturnal. Another option when choosing freshwater fish are schooling fish. Two examples of schooling fish are Neons, and Cardirai Tatras.

The Jeweled Eel is a nocturnal predator, ambushing fish and crustaceans. In the aquarium it will learn to feed during the daylight hours, and it will take frozen or freeze-dried krill, fish, shrimp, and most meaty foods.

Some catfish like the Jaguar - Liosomodarus onicinus are nocturnal and hide during the day, and come out to feed at night. In general, catfish will relish sinking catfish pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex and good quality flake food.

Temperment= This is a peaceable, solitary, nocturnal fish.

Nocturnal by nature, they spend most of the daylight hours hidden under a rock or in a cave, coming out at night to feed continously on algae and other bits of food.

General: A peaceful and nocturnal fish that feeds and swims while upside down. Provide plenty of swimming room and hiding spots. Some driftwood in the tank is recommended. In nature they spend time hovering upside down under submerged tree branches.

Nautilus are nocturnal and undergo a daily, vertical migration. They require a cool-water, dark, and very deep, dedicated aquarium.

The timing is not critical, with the exception of nocturnal feeders, such as certain catfish. If you have nocturnal fish in your tank, be sure to feed them just before turning the lights out at night.

It is a hardy eater, nocturnal, but may be active during the day. Its temperature range is broad but does best in the mid-seventies. Water quality is no problem but its native waters is soft, acid water.

Nocturnals need dark, cave-like places to protect them from the light of day. If your community will be filled with many different types of fish, a larger aquarium will help you address all of the various landscaping requirements of your fish.

What is it?
Colored lighting is lighting that is different colors such as white, red, blue, and green. It usually used to simulate moon lighting, illuminate the tank at night to observe nocturnal creatures, and for decorative purposes.

If your fish your fish consume most of the food before it makes it to the bottom of the tank, then some extra food should be given to the shrimps after the fishes have been fed, or at night (most shrimps are nocturnal).

Some aquarists report that with rising temperature also the colouring appears more beautiful. A nocturnal lowering of the water temperature by approx. 5 °C has proved advantageous for of breeding as well as for the health of the fish.

Also, fish in a well decorated tank are more likely to display their natural behavior, show improved coloration, be more active, and spend more time out of hiding! However, this does not mean that nocturnal fish will come out during the day or that ...

At night the parents herd the fry together in a tight group in the corners or other hidden areas to guard them from nocturnal predators. This only pertains to the very young fry until they are about three or four weeks old.
