Love that fish, have 8 in a 29g heavily planted tank together with odessa barbs and a red-fin shark. Very active, always on the move, swim mostly at top-middle, enjoy swimming against the current from the pump.
I have 7 Melanotaenia australis in a 400 litre with pearl danios, odessa barbs, a male Geophagus brasiliensis (to be re-homed) and a weather loach (soon adding more). The tank temp is generally 22-24°C. Mine have bred at 24°C and pH 7.2.
I know that they prefer to be in spots that are full of vegetation or hiding spaces and that they prefer to hunt for their food at night. I currently keep mine with Celebes rainbows, green tiger barbs, odessa barbs and various fancy plecos.
