OK, so maybe it's not quite true that "Aquariums are People, Too".

Does old tank syndrome really exist?
Because so many aquarists have experienced it, old tank syndrome must exist.

Old Tank Syndrome - Condition in which organic acids, excess nitrates, and other products accumulate in the aquarium, causing gradual decline in pH or a sudden pH crash.

Your fish produce organic acids, causing your tank to get more acidic as it ages (old tank syndrome). This is one of the reasons we do water changes.
