Native to Southeast Asia: probably limited to Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Malay Peninsula, Thailand and Indochina (Mekong basin). Has been introduced to several countries for aquaculture purposes.

Osphronemus goramy are, in my view, the most intelligent fish available to the hobbyist. They have strong personalities, and every one is different.

Osphronemus goramy is omnivorous, eating anything from pellets to plants or feeders. Vegetation is a vital part of their diet. These fish especially enjoy bananam lettuce and peas.

The contents of their tanks reflect their interests, and I made some notes of what they had in stock when I visited: In one tank alone they had large Exodon paradoxis (buck-toothed tetras), clown knife fish, archer fish, ...

True Gouramis (Osphronemus goramy) are not very aggressive for their size, and eat most foods readily.

Giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy)

If the name doesn’t alert you, their adult size certainly should. These fish grow to be over 2 feet long, and amazingly, they keep appearing for sale in pet stores.

PD : A large, laterally compressed fish with an oval-shaped body. Young fish have a pointed head, while older individuals have a small, blunt head.
