Oto Antics
Before we got Otos, I thought only cories would rush up to the top of the tank to 'gulp' air. Watching our first batch of Otos acclimate to their new home, I was surprised to see them do the same.

Oto Catfish
Part of a large family of Loricariidae found in rapidly moving rivers throughout most of South America, the Otocinclus spp. are among the smallest species. Oto catfish grow up to 5 cm, which makes them suitable for smaller aquariums.

When you look up "cute" in the dictionary, there's a picture of an oto. These tiny (1.5" inches according to the Badman's profile) are peaceful, darling, inexpensive and very, very avid algae eaters - of certain algae.

Niger Oto - Hisonotus leucofrenatus (Ribeiro, 1908)
An aquarium catfish need not be expensive to make a new and very interesting addition to the aquarium. One prime example is this month's Catfish of the Month introduced to us by Paul E. Turley.

wendtii and an algae-covered bit of driftwood that I'm rather fond of, a few male common guppies, an oto, some ghost shrimp and a female American flag fish. The tank was unfiltered but circulation was provided by a small powerhead.

In its natural habitat, the Peppered Oto imitates Corydoras paleatus, or Peppered Cory, for protection (the spines of the Peppered Cory are poisonous, so this deters predators from both the Cory and Oto).
