Pacu Care Basics
Basic Information on Keeping a Pet Pacu in Your Aquarium
Overview: ...

Pacu (IPA: [paˈku]) is a common name used to refer to several species of South American freshwater fish that are closely related to the piranha.

My Pacu is 17" and I believe almost 3yrs. old. When we first received this fish from a friend at approx. 7", he was mistakenly Id'd as a Pirana. He sure looked like one! ...

This fish is really only suitable for public aquaria, many of which are already well stocked with pacu which have outgrown their homes, and may be reluctant to accept more.

Pacu Species Quick Stats
Food: Omnivore, will eat most larger foods. Vegetarians and will accept flakes, lettuce, spinach, even chopped zucchini.
Breeding: Unlikely in aquaria, due to size.

Pacu's are heavy eaters and do not attack tank mates out of aggression, they attack them out of hunger. Keep them well fed and have a large enough tank for them, I recommend 1000+ Liters.

My pacu is or was sick, his eyes are cloudy, not active and his fins are down and together. I'm worried and wanted to see if anyone had any advise, thank-you, Tara

The Pacu gets way too big for most home aquariums and is then sometimes released into local waterways. Ugh. Do not release fish into your local water ways!
Colombian Tetra
Another medium sized tetra that can get aggressive with other species.

The Red Pacu is very similar in appearance to the Red Belly Piranha, though its much larger! The body will be dark or light gray in color with orange marking under the mouth and on the belly.

This year I have only one Oscar who is being a pain in my "ear" and can only be kept with a medium-to-large Jack Dempsey and a very large Pacu.

One only needs to look in shops or public aquariums to see how many pacu, Red Tailed Catfish, Giant Gouramis, triggerfish, eels, and yes, even sharks have been donated because they have outgrown their original owners' aquaria.

What they caught was a close cousin, the pacu, an aquarium fish sold in many pet stores. These fish look like piranhas, but grow much larger and have two rows of square teeth, unlike the piranha, which has one row of pointed teeth.

Large active fish, the bigger barbs, Labeo ''sharks'', Loricariids, Pacu.
Breeding
Unknown and probably impossible in the confines of a home aquarium. Is commercially bred for the aquarium trade in large ponds.

The Metynnis species are closely related biologically to the pacu and piranha, sharing the peaceful traits of the former rather than the aggressiveness of the latter.

Several examples include, but are not limited to, the common plecostomus, the silver arowana, the red-bellied pacu, and tinfoil barbs. Realize that the myth 'the fish will grow to the size of the tank' is just that, a myth.

Aside from behaving in response to the natural stimuli in their tank environment, fish have also been known to respond to their keepers. Larger species, like the Oscar, Pacu, Grouper, Arowana, and Triggerfish, are receptive to hand feeding; ...
