Several species of Panaque have become popular aquarium fish, in particular the brightly coloured Panaque nigrolineatus.

PD: The Royal Panaque is covered everywhere but the belly with large bony plates. The head is large, broad, and flat.

One year later everything seems to be OK in the tank while most of the "skin" of the wood has been eaten by the group of Panaque nigrolineatus which spend almost all their day on it - completely ignoring the huge bogwood pieces in the tank.

Some of the most notable wood eaters being sucker-mouth catfish (Loricariids), such as the Royal Pleco (Panaque nigrolineatus). Availability of bogwood/driftwood should be seen as a necessity for these species that surely will not thrive without it.
