The grammodes has been often referred to as a miniature version of Parachromis dovii and should be treated as such. By miniature this means the grammodes will only grow to a modest 12" instead of 30" plus of the real Wolf cichlid.

Larger species of the group (namely Parachromis dovii and P. managuensis) are decidedly more piscivorous than their smaller cousins, P. friedrichstahli, P. motaguensis, and P. loisellei.

It is not advisable to house the Mayan cichlid with other cichlids from the Nandopsis group, such as the jaguar cichlid, Parachromis managuensis, the wolf cichlid, Parachromis dovii, or the Motagua cichlid, Parachromis motaguensis.
