Piranha Care Basics
Basic Information on Keeping a Piranha as a Pet
Overview: ...

Piranhas can be bought as pets in some areas. The most common by far is Pygocentrus nattereri, or the red-bellied piranha. They can either be bought fully grown or as babies no bigger than a thumbnail.

The Piranha fish is a legendary fish. Known as the "Wolf of the Water," these amazingly designed fish hunt as a perfect pack, not normally leaving any chance of escape for their prey.

Piranha are not at all the vicious fish they've been made out to be. It's unfortunate that people think they'll kill anything in the water because many people will starve piranha in the home aquarium to see them go into a furious feeding frenzy.

Piranhas breeding in captivity is a rare event. It is usually achieved spontaneously in large public aquariums. Finding a compatible pair of fish that are this aggressive can be very difficult.

Piranhas are unique creatures that have gained popularity not just because of their appearance, but also due to the many myths that are told about them. Unfortunately only a few species of piranha have been bred, including Serrasalmus nattereri, S.

The piranha are infamous as highly dangerous carnivores. This reputation is somewhat exaggerated, but it is wise to take precautions when carrying out tank maintenance, as they can inflict nasty bites.

Piranhas
Piranhas are among the most abused of all aquarium fish. They are often purchased in order to watch their legendary feeding habits.

Piranhas are schooling fish and are generally shy and stressed when kept as single specimens. Unfortunately, they also get big (many species well over a foot long), so most beginning aquarists don't have room to house more than a single Piranha.

Red Piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri): The "Jaws" of the freshwater tropical aquarium, I'm sure that everyone has heard of this fish. Its teeth-filled mouth and aggresive nature makes it suitable only for a piranha only tank.

This Piranha will look very similar to the Redbelly Piranha in body type. It will be silver with tiny scales and may have red coloring around the face and gills. The fins will be characteristically black. This is one of smaller species of Piranha.

The Red Piranha is a hardy fish. It should be kept in water with a pH level of 6.4 to 6.8. The water they live in should have a temperature between 80 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit.

Myth: Piranhas are cichlids
OK, so maybe this isn't exactly a common misconception, but I have heard it. I used to occasionally drop into the local Petsmart see if there were any females with mouthfuls (20 fish for the price of one!).

A good sized piranha was housed in a tank just below the desk of Luca.

Did you know that piranhas, carnivorous fish and other tropical fish anti-social all fall within the tropical zone "category?

SC : Cichlasomines, Pimelodids, Loricarids, Pacus, Piranha, Silver Dollars, Arawana.
FOOD : Fish are the main part of the diet for most Pike Cichlids.

You might find piranhas in the same stream. Would anyone suggest putting piranhas in a discus breeding tank?" Marc Weiss vehemently states that most discus are not killed by disease but rather by poor care.

Piranha are actually quite peaceful. So are most Moray Eels. African Cichlids are primarily herbivores (vegetarian), but are extremely aggressive.

Next door is River Scout where one can see Discus, Cichlids, Piranha, Arapaima, and even otters. The third gallery is called Cold Water Quest.

In addition some fish such as piranhas and tetras possess a 'second' dorsal fin. This is known as the 'adipose fin', and it can be a small singular structure (as in characins) or a more elaborate one (as in some catfishes).

These cattle live with Jaguar, Anaconda, and Piranha. A beeping horn does not even rate a bored nod from them. Eventually we make it to the cinderblock ranch house where a few llanero men lay about, swinging in hammocks.

The deadly Amazon piranhas (Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus) belong to this group as do the South American tetras, and Astyanax mexicanus, a blind cave fish from Mexico. African tetras are in a separate family, Alestiidae.

Pacus (Myleus sp.) are the big cousin to the piranha family, and can get to 50 pounds or more. They eat mostly plant material in nature, but will happily accept nearly anything that fits in their mouths.

The Metynnis species are closely related biologically to the pacu and piranha, sharing the peaceful traits of the former rather than the aggressiveness of the latter.

The most common aquarium specie is the tetra, although hatchetfishes, pencilfishes, as well as piranhas, belong to this group of active swimmers.

Malachite green may also stain some decorations and silicone to a green color and may be toxic to piranhas, neons, sunfish, and some scaleless fish, if given at the recommended dose.

However, a colony of prolific cichlids, such as convicts, can practically be used as a source of feeder fry. For fish like piranhas, a small piece of raw chicken or a strip of fish fillet will work just as well as a live fish.

In freshwater aquariums, cichlid, arowana, and piranha tanks often pose this problem, but don't overlook bottom dwelling botias and catfish in the more peaceful community tanks.
