Plants for the Aquarium
Aquatic plants have been an integral part of aquarium keeping since it's earliest days, when they not only provided shelter and decoration, but also served as living filtration and aeration systems.

Plants are much more than tank decorations; they help keep the fish healthy. Nitrogenous compounds, particularly ammonia and nitrite, are extremely toxic to fish.

PLANTS IN A MARINE AQUARIUM
There are substantially fewer marine plants suited to an aquarium than freshwater ones. The most common are from the Caulerpa genus, which grow quickly under the right conditions.

Plants to buy for low-light, regular substrate aquarium are:

Live plants benefit your aquariums and dwarf cichlids in many ways. They improve your water quality by providing excellent surfaces that can be colonized by beneficial nitrifying bacteria. They directly remove some compounds from the water.

Healthy Plants in an Aquarium
Healthy plants can make a home or office aquarium look much more inviting. However, the plants do require their own care, and can make the tank more work overall.

Plants will not only provide your fish with valuable shelters and make your aquarium look beautiful; they will also help you to keep the water quality up. Fish and plants coexist in the wild and will complement each other well in the aquarium.

Plants not only beautify your aquarium, they consume the end-product of the nitrogen cycle: nitrate. They also give your puffer places to hide and explore. I highly recommend live plants for your aquarium.

Plants that float on the surface of the aquarium can create sheltered, low light conditions for fish that need such an environment.

Plants generally need at least 5mg/l CO2 to photosynthesize and most aquatic plants grown for the aquarium need a slightly acid water (this also helps with nutrient absorption and helps keep nutrients like Fe available).

Plants come in all shapes and sizes. You can find dwarf aquarium plants, which only grow an inch or two high, and mix those with much larger, tree-like plants for great landscaping.

Plants Plants are useful in aquariums because they provide hiding places for fish and serve as territorial markers for more aggressive fish. Plants also improve water quality because they utilize nitrogen and phosphate products produced by fish.

For plants with many stems emanating from a crown, do not get gravel between the stems and expose the top of the crown.

Aquarium plants are as important to aquariums as water is to fish. Aquarium plants add more life to aquarium and make it to look beautiful while completing the aquarium community structure.

Although plants will use Nitrates as a source of food, and your tank has levels of 20-30ppm or over, some plants can be affected badly. Only 20-30ppm? That's not right surely?

The second concept I find helpful in understanding Brackish Water Aquariums is Eurohaline. This applies to the livestock suitable for Brackish water.

PLANTS:
Because of the strong water current, the rapids are not a hospitable place for plants.
In the aquarium, plants can be used if they well anchored or protected from the current.

Plants for your Tank
Plants used in fish aquariums are usually categorized by their "behavior." That is:
will they stay rooted,
are they bunches that move around in the water, or
do they like to float on the top.

Which plants will work?
Goldfish cannot resist nibbling, snacking, pulling at plants, digging around them, and blundering through them. Plants need to be robust and able to withstand the fishes' attentions.

What do plants need?
Plants require three things to grow and survive. These are light, CO2 and nutrients. Tap water contains some, but not all the nutrients required by many tropical plants.

Plants serve two main functions in the aquarium: aesthetics for the aquarist and habitat for the fish. If you are happy with plastic plants, your fish will be too.

Plants are essential for decorations. They will provide the appropriate hiding places and will mimic the natural environment. While generally very peaceful these fish have been known to attack their tankmates, it's not common but it does happen.

Plants and lilies can help considerably with algae control in a pond. They will be very pleasing aesthetically and at the same time help control algae by consuming the nutrients that promote its growth.

Plants are necessary to make this fish feel at home. Floating plants that diffuse overhead light help but are not mandatory. Open swimming space is required, as this fish favours swimming freely at feeding.
Compatibility ...

For plants that demand medium to high light, most people find they need at least two fluorescent bulbs of the length of normal tanks (20-gallon (80l), two 24 inch tubes; 55-gallon (200l), two 48 inch tubes).

Live plants also are very useful during the cycling process. A heavily planted tank will often skip the ammonia and nitrite spike altogether.

Live plants may be eaten.

Vallisneria spiralis Plant Profile
Italian Val is an excellent plant for any aquarium, as it will pretty easily adapt to any water and light conditions. The more light and food given the plant, the faster it will grow.

Aquatic plants are used to give the aquarium a natural appearance, oxygenate the water, and provide habitat for fish, especially fry (babies) and for invertebrate species. Some aquarium fish and invertebrates also eat live plants.

Aquatic plants not only makes nice tank decorations, they also help to give your fish a more natural and interesting environment to explore and play in. I think it is cruel to keep any living animals in a bare tank.

Daughter plants are readily produced from the sporangia on the older fronds.

Add water plants to your pond such as lily pads and hornwort. This serves a few purposes. Firstly, it aids in the biological filtration of your pond.

Most of the plants and fish commonly kept in aquariums are kept between temperatures of 72 - 83 F. Most people maintain a temp. of around 77-80. To keep this we must have heaters unless wherever the tank is kept is always a steady temperature.

Using Fake Plants and Corals
Sometimes we get really into our hobby and want to make everything as natural as possible. Real sand, real rocks, real plants, real corals and hopefully real fish.

Whilst young, plants can be used but as they mature expect the plants to be uprooted.
Good filtration is also required as being typical large cichlids they do make a mess.

Loves aquatic plants and lives in schools in the wild. This fish looks delicate but is hardy. It is interestingly individual. Its movements are unlike those of other catfishes, possibly excepting the Glass Catfish, Kryptopterus bicirrhus.

What are these plants ? Where do they come from ? Why are they growing in my tank, and how do i control them or get rid of them ?

Noctural: Plants or animals that are most active during the night.
Node: The part of the stem from which one or more leaves arise. Also refers to bumps on the lower part of the columella.

Live Plants
Live plants should be included in all freshwater tanks. Water quality is monitored by live plants as they will look sickly before the fish die, they aid in keeping water clear, hinder growth of algae and add Oxygen to the water.

Spawn over fine plants. Java Moss or spawning mops can be provided. Spawning usually takes place in the morning. The eggs take about 7 days to hatch, and are best removed to a separate rearing tank.
