The Platy or Moonfish, Xiphophorous maculatus and the Variegated Platy or Variatus Platy, Xiphophorous variatus are a short stocky fish lacking the extended tail fin or "sword" of their close relative, the Swordtail Xiphophorous helleri.

Platydoras costatus are not commercially bred and so all specimens available for sale are wild-caught. With all such shipments, odd balls or "contaminants" can sometimes be found.

Parental care in the fish world varies widely.

(35 mm) long red platy juveniles. The only problem I ever had with this species is with the yellow form that I haven't seen in about 15 years. This form had the nastiest males I ever saw.

The first possible winner is a large, beautifully colored Pineapple Platy with no flaws. The second potential winner is a very large Ameca splendens, a truly impressive entry. The third candidate is a rare Veiltail Molly with a long flowing caudal.

Bad First Fish
We have already discussed several poor choice for beginners' fish alongside their more desirable cousins.

Guppies are relatives of mollies, platys and swordtails they belong to the same family: Poeciliidae. All of them are livebearers meaning that they give birth to live young.

To date, I have had good results using -Corelia -, -Dunalielia- and - Platymonas- algae. The algae and rotifer cultures are raised separately in two and three liter transparent cola bottles.
