Mango Pleco (L-47)
The Mango Pleco comes from the Amazon Basin of South America. This Pleco can be identified by its lime green body coloration with a bright yellow stripe on both the dorsal and caudal fin.

Plecostomus, pleco, or plec is a general name for a type of freshwater tropical Central and South American fish belonging to the family Loricariidae. Plecos are extremely popular in aquaria for their ability to clean tanks by eating algae growth.

Plecostomus Or Pleco Species Profile
The plecostomus is a peaceful species that can be housed in a community tank as a single member of its species.

Plecos
Plecos or Plecostomus, members of the Loricariidae family, are peaceful and participate in very little active swimming, preferring to rest or slowly graze over the aquarium bottom.

Species name: Panaque nigrolineatus
Common name: Royal Pleco, L190 ...

Plecos come in all shapes and sizes, and some are better suited for planted tanks than others. Most plecos grow to be over 12" in length when mature and are therefore not a good idea for most normal sized aquariums.

Plecos
Members of the Loricariidae family of suckermouth catfish, called "Plecostomus" or "Plecos," are almost exclusively a freshwater fish. With little tolerance for salinity, their geographical range is from Panama to Uruguay in South America.

Plecos should not have to rely on naturally growing algae alone as their only diet. As they mature they lose their algae eating tendencies somewhat and must be fed a basic diet of sinking herbivorous foods.

Pleco or Plecostomus make very good community fish as they are peaceful with other tankmates. The only exception to this is they can get aggressive and territorial towards other plecos if they were not raised together.

Filtration
Use a combination of mechanical, biological plus possibly chemical filter; as long as it does not disturb your plants, you can have water turbulence.

My plecostomus seems to be a real character. When I sit in front of the tank he seems to recognise its owner and comes to the front. When pellets are dropped into the tank he rushes out and looks for the food frantically.

Hypancistrus zebra "Zebra Pleco" L-46
Origin and locale/variety: Nkhomo Reef--Malawi, Lake Malawi, East Africa
Size: Adults are usually 2.0 to 3.5 inches in aquarium environment.

Plecos
The suckermouth catfish of the genus Hypostomus are often sold in the stores as algae cleaners. Most of these species get in excess of 12".

Pleco
The pleco has several names, the best one of them 'janitor fish'. Some unflattering names include 'poo eating fish', sucker etc. They are a type of catfish.

"Plecostomus" sp.
Plecostomus is the generic name for a wide range of sucker-mouth fish. Only the smaller types are useful in a planted tank, since the larger varieties tend to eat the plant right along with the algae.

Plecostomus are probably the most popular algae eaters on the planet. Just about every aquarist has heard of them and most have had at least one in their aquariums.

Pleco species can be quarrelsome amongst themselves and may be picked on by other fish due to their generally slow-moving nature. Provide a hiding cave for each Pleco and give them territories proportional to their size e.g. 10 gallons for a 3" fish.

The Plecostomus is one of the fastest growing catfishes in captivity. A "cute" three-inch Pleco can double in length in six months and grow to a "horrendous" adult size of close to two feet in a couple of years.

Try a Pleco if your tank is large. Unfortunately plecos grow quite large and like algae less as they grow older. It's a common mistake to get one of these to remove algae, only to find the algae problem continues and a space problem is added.

Common Plecostomus
Hypostomus plecostomus
Catfish are not scavengers, to be put in an aquarium to clean up messes. You may have heard that if you keep Catfish and/or a Plecostomus or two, you'll hardly ever need to clean your tank.

Plecostomus
The Plecostomus, also known as a Suckermouth Catfish or Pleco is a bottom feeding, algae eating fish. The Suckermouth is very interesting to watch when it is active, swimming about the tank sucking on to everything.

Plecos- see above.
Bumblebee gobies- Here are some cool little fish. They are yellow and black banded, and for some reason puffers don't normally eat them.

A pleco will outgrow a 20 gal as well. Generally, you want 1 pleco for a 60 gal tank. We started with a 29 gal, a pleco and 6 cichlids (new to aquariums) and very quickly all but 2 cichlids died off.

Many people rush out to the local fish store to buy a common pleco when they see they have an algae problem. In general, a common pleco is not a good solution to getting rid of algae.

Plecos are probably the best possible tank-mate for the Black Piranha, but it has been reported that the Black Piranha will attack and kill a Pleco as well. It might be best to keep them as the only specieis in the tank.

Algae Eaters: Snails, shrimp, Plecostomus, and Otocinclus to name just a few of the animals often recruited to deal with problem algae in the aquarium.

Red spots, gold spots, and common plecos are some of the most popular in the hobby. They are often called sailfin plecos due to their very large dorsal fins.

Herbivorous fishes include mbuna, plecos, and many Central American cichlids. Further, omnivores (most fishes in our aquaria) enjoy both live and "green food" on a regular basis.

Herbivores, such as Plecos, African Cichlids, Pacus, and Silver Dollars, are plant eaters. They do well with staple flake foods and algae wafers. They can also be supplemented with finely chopped lettuce, spinach, zucchini, or green peas.

Tank Mates: 1 Common pleco, 2 Platys, 4 Mollys, 2 Guppies, 1 Clown Loach, 3 Golden apple snails
Member Comment: This tank I setup for my nan, after seeing my saltwater aquarium she fell in love with it and decided she wanted one.

We are having algae blooms too often and our Plecostomus are dying almost immediately after being introduced to our tank. We have goldfish in the tank and they appear to be healthy.

Select a hardy species and make sure to incorporate some algae controlling species, such as Pencil Fish, Livebearers, Ancistrus, Otocynclus or Sailfin Plecostomus.

Will successfully live with Catfish and Plecostomus. May live with some Tetras or other peaceful fish, but depends on the personality of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Do not house with Angels, Gouramis or Paradises, because they will fight.

Practically impossible to get rid of especially if it is on plants. If it is on the glass however most sucker fish like a pleco will get it off. For plants that keep getting it make sure to move them so no direct sunlight hits them.

Order of fish (part of the superorder Protacanthopterygii) includes fish such as Salmon and trout (Salmo and Oncorhynchus), Whitefish (Coregonus), Ayu (Plecoglossus) and Pike (Esox) ...

it is just making its claim to the tank floor, don't listen when people say Cray are not quick enough to catch some fish, piffle if your Cray wants a cory or a pleco, it is more than fast enough to do so.

Some example of algae eating fish are Bristle Noses and Clown Plecostomus'. This will be a big help to you in keeping the algae under control. Another type of freshwater fish are the Oscars.
