Plecostomus Or Pleco Species Profile
The plecostomus is a peaceful species that can be housed in a community tank as a single member of its species.

Plecostomus, pleco, or plec is a general name for a type of freshwater tropical Central and South American fish belonging to the family Loricariidae. Plecos are extremely popular in aquaria for their ability to clean tanks by eating algae growth.

My plecostomus seems to be a real character. When I sit in front of the tank he seems to recognise its owner and comes to the front. When pellets are dropped into the tank he rushes out and looks for the food frantically.

The Plecostomus Catfish, Hypostomus plecostomus, is a long time aquarium favorite. The main attraction of this fish is its ability to keep the aquarium free of algae.

Pleco or Plecostomus make very good community fish as they are peaceful with other tankmates. The only exception to this is they can get aggressive and territorial towards other plecos if they were not raised together.

Hypostomus plecostomus is the latin name of the ever-present "pleco", that almost obligatory algae eating "tank cleaner." I say "tank cleaner" loosely since these potentially large fish produce amazing amounts of waste.

"Plecostomus" sp.
Plecostomus is the generic name for a wide range of sucker-mouth fish. Only the smaller types are useful in a planted tank, since the larger varieties tend to eat the plant right along with the algae.

Plecostomus (pleco)
Plecos come in all shapes and sizes, and some are better suited for planted tanks than others. Most plecos grow to be over 12" in length when mature and are therefore not a good idea for most normal sized aquariums.

The Plecostomus is one of the fastest growing catfishes in captivity. A "cute" three-inch Pleco can double in length in six months and grow to a "horrendous" adult size of close to two feet in a couple of years.

The Plecostomus Catfish, Hypostomus plecostomus, is a long time fish tank favorite. This fish has the ability to keep the aquarium free of algae. It does this by "sucking" at the aquarium wals or decorations with its sown-turned mouth.

Common Plecostomus
Hypostomus plecostomus
Catfish are not scavengers, to be put in an aquarium to clean up messes. You may have heard that if you keep Catfish and/or a Plecostomus or two, you'll hardly ever need to clean your tank.

Unlike many Plecostomus species, Zebra Pleco's tend more toward the carnivorous. They prefer high protein, meaty foods, with only a small amount of vegetable matter.

Peppermint Plecostomus (L-31)
The Peppermint Plecostomus is one of the more beautiful plecos and has a dark brown to black color. The body and fins are marked with many very small brilliant white specks.

Plecostomus
The Plecostomus, also known as a Suckermouth Catfish or Pleco is a bottom feeding, algae eating fish. The Suckermouth is very interesting to watch when it is active, swimming about the tank sucking on to everything.

Algae Eaters: Snails, shrimp, Plecostomus, and Otocinclus to name just a few of the animals often recruited to deal with problem algae in the aquarium.

The common plecostomus will eat some kinds of algae when it is young, but stops eating algae all together when it reaches a length of around 5'-6'.

Oscars, silver dollars, Gars, Plecostomus, Large Pacus, and other similarly sized cichlids will get along quite well with Green Terrors. A Green Terror should not be kept with any African Cichlids once they reach adulthood.

"I read (heard) that driftwood is good for my plecostomus. Why?" From my research this is true. It seems that pleco's rasp fibers off the wood and break it down for the cellulose. As I understand it, it helps their digestive system.

We are having algae blooms too often and our Plecostomus are dying almost immediately after being introduced to our tank. We have goldfish in the tank and they appear to be healthy.

Pl*co: Another name for Pleco, or Plecostomus. A superstition on the internet where if you spell "Pleco" correctly, your pleco will soon die. That is why this word "Pl*co" was created.
Planktivorous: Feeding on planktonic organisms.

Select a hardy species and make sure to incorporate some algae controlling species, such as Pencil Fish, Livebearers, Ancistrus, Otocynclus or Sailfin Plecostomus.

Will successfully live with Catfish and Plecostomus. May live with some Tetras or other peaceful fish, but depends on the personality of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Do not house with Angels, Gouramis or Paradises, because they will fight.

Several examples include, but are not limited to, the common plecostomus, the silver arowana, the red-bellied pacu, and tinfoil barbs. Realize that the myth 'the fish will grow to the size of the tank' is just that, a myth.

"Pleco'' (a shortening of the now-unused genus name Plecostomus) is the common term used for suckermouth catfish of the family Loricariidae.

The common name of "plec" or "pleco" is derived from the obsolete genus name of Plecostomus. A number of different species are often sold under the name of "common plec", which may include other species in addition to the ones above.

Best known examples are the sucking loach or Chinese algae, eater-gyrinocheilus aymonieri and the plecostomus and hypostomus. But unfortunately they are rare to come by in pet shops in the country.

i was told when starting a tank for cichlids that all fish wether cichlids or other should be close to the same size do to cichlids being carnivor. started with one med cichlid added a med plecostomus, crawfish, and small/med cichlid.

Some example of algae eating fish are Bristle Noses and Clown Plecostomus'. This will be a big help to you in keeping the algae under control. Another type of freshwater fish are the Oscars.

They were always found attached by their suckermouths to the glass or plants and sometimes graze on the gravel in the manner of a plecostomus; not in the "foraging" manner of a catfish.
