PMDD has no P (phosphate). According to work by Sears and Conlin, having the P in N-P-K as your limiting major fertilizer factor helps reduce algae.

PMDD (or Poor Man's Dosing Drops) is a do-it-yourself recipe, put together by Kevin Conlin and Paul Sears as part of their experiments to control algae.
