The colour variety I preferred was the common Poecilia sphenops with a rich, velvety black body that carried a broad bright orange vertical stripe on the edge of the tail. They also frequently carried a bright golden spot in the centre of the eye.

SYN : Mollienisia sphenops is the most common among more than 40 synonyms known.
PD : An elongated, laterally compressed fish with a pointed snout. The caudal fin is fan-shaped.

The fancy mollies are mostly hybrids of Poecilia sphenops, P. latipinna and P. velifera with possibly some others thrown in. These seem to be approved hybrids and are typically seen and welcomed at society functions. What about fancy discus?

The Marble Lyretail Molly, also called the Mexican Lyretail Molly, Giant Lyretail Molly, Yucatan Molly, and sometimes simply Lyretail Molly, is a color variety of the Poecilia sphenops Lyretail Molly.

Common Mollies are the Black Molly (which was derived from the Marled Molly - Poecilia sphenops) and the Sail-Fin Molly - Poecilia velifera (of which there are also several color varieties available).

Natural ancestors: Poecilia velifera, Poecilia sphenops, and Poecilia latipinna. The currently available forms are mostly crossings between several of these fish.

Molly x Molly - (or Poecilia sphenops), as above with Platys.
Molly x Guppy - Called a "Muppy" or "Golly". This does happen, but the fry are sometimes very weak and do not live long.
