Origin: Afrika, Congo river basin(Angola, Congo, Cameroun). Occurs also in lake Tanganjika. Mostly found in standing or slowly flowing waters of swamps and rivers.

Origin and locale/variety: Nkhomo Reef--Malawi, Lake Malawi, East Africa
Size: Adults are usually 2.0 to 3.5 inches in aquarium environment.

Polypterus ornatipinnis can get up to about 50 cm. They are nocturnal predators, eating small fish and aquatic frogs in the wild, but in captivity some will eat almost anything like shrimp pellets, frozen krill, frozen beefheart etc, ...

The Ornate Bichir, Polypterus ornatipinnis, is considered the most attractive of the Bichir group. It is a Lobe-finned Pike, a freshwater fish found in Africa.

PD: An elongated species having a dorsal fin consisting of 8-10 separate rays. The pectoral fins are paddle-like, and the pelvic fin is located far back of the body.

In one of the 300 gallon tanks they had full grown gold severums, tinfoil barbs, silver dollars, maroon sharks, large plecostamus, Polypterus ornatipinnis, and a gold Australian arowana.
