Prefilter: A prefilter is used mainly in marine tanks to remove large particles as the water leaves the tank, enroute to the sump.

Prefilter: This is a small mechanical filter attached to the input to another filter, usually biological. It is placed there to make sure that the biofilter does not get clogged with gunk, decreasing its effectiveness.
Hang-on prefilters usually consist of two parts, the actual prefilter box that hangs on the back of the aquarium, and a "waterfall" collection cup, which goes inside the aquarium. The two parts are usually connected using nylon bolts and nuts.

Prefilter sponges: I use the Lustar FilterMax line of prefilters for any tank with shrimp breeding or fish fry if I am not gravel vacuuming. These have two porosities and two sizes of the finer porosity available.

Important Note on Prefiltering!
If you do not use a prefilter (mechanical filter) you can still get good results AT FIRST. This is because if you have porous bio media, they can trap dirt and debris and work like a mechanical filter.

Once the tank is placed, install the filtration. If it is an UGF, then place the filter plate(s) on the bottom of the tank. If it is a wet/dry, then connect the prefilter and all the hoses.
Also helps if you have a tank with sand in the bottom while using a power filter with a magnet impeller assembly. And it keeps the sand from getting intoyour filter. It also serves as a good prefilter.
