The female is a bit similar in shape to Cyprinodon (pupfishes) which they are said to have some affinities to. The first ray of the dorsal fin is hard like those present in the spinal dorsal of cichlids, another unique trait.
Some species spend part of the year living under a layer of ice, while the Desert Pupfish (Cyprinodon species) has, on occasion, been found in water with a temperature of 116.6°F (47°C).
Like most killies, breeds on mops, breeding is accomplished by feeding a wide variety of foods and providing a place to spawn. Male and female swim side by side, male cupping his fins over her like many pupfishes.
Otocinclus species and many pupfish are notorious for not taking shipping well. I strongly suspect that one reason is that they eat greens right up to the point of capture, and then secrete ammonia throughout the journey.
