Quarantine Tank Setup
You don't need to go all out here. A simple tank size of 10 - 20 gallons will suffice for most people. If you have larger fish, then obviously you want to get a bigger quarantine tank.

A Quarantine Tank (QT) is a very useful and important accessory for the serious and responsible aquarist.

Quarantine Tank Tip
You can use a large Rubbermaid tub as a quarantine tank. The fish should only be in there for a maximum of two weeks so you shouldn't have any ammonia problems. Be sure to keep an eye on the ammonia just to be safe.

Quarantine tank(s): is a aquarium that imposes a period of isolation to lesson the risk of a contaminant which may spread to the main tank. In a quarantine tank, fish are allowed to acclimate and or recuperate from the stress of transport.

A quarantine tank does not have to be large, sophisticated, or expensive. In fact, in many ways, the simpler your quarantine system is, the better.

Use a quarantine tank with a UV steriliser device.
Keep the tank in a natural soil-based substrate with large numbers of other bacteria keeps the growth rate of Mycobacteriosis down. See Walstad tank and Competitive Exclusion.

A small quarantine tank (30x20x25cm) is advisable for any serious aquarist. The alternative is to be sure that your pet shop has a functional quarantine section to cater for bacterial, fungal and viral diseases.

While a quarantine tank is a good idea, it is most likely that you do not have such a luxury (for now, at least... :).

Use of a quarantine tank is probably the best solution. A small 10 gallon tank with a heater, air-stone, and some live rock for filtration should suffice.

My invert quarantine tank is actually a 20 gallon invert only nano-reef that I leave set up all the time.

Hospital/quarantine tank- this needs to be big enough to house your largest fish. It needn't be set up all the time but you will need a mature filter to go in it.

Remove to a quarantine tank and treat any fish that begins to show the first signs of ich.
Avoid any fluctuations in temperature, pH, or ammonia levels as these are all very stressful to fish and can result in an outbreak of ich.

If you don't use a quarantine tank, then it is a very good idea to give the fish a freshwater bath before placing it into your main tank.

These customers are the ones the rest of us buy quarantine tanks from at the garage sales. They get frustrated that they cannot make their real tank match the one in their head, and sell or throw out everything.

Start changing over the water in the quarantine tanks with the original water from the moved tank. I usually use 50 to 100% of the original tank water, depending on the water temperature and other parameters of both the old and new water.

It only costs about ten dollars and can be used as a hospital or quarantine tank later. If you absolutely cannot afford a spare tank, the next option would be to use a clean five-gallon bucket that has never had detergents or chemicals in it.

A tank used to display and house fish under normal circumstances, as opposed to quarantine tanks, which are usually kept mostly bare.
