Red Devil is a must own fish. I had 2 Red Devils that were about 18 cm long in a 220 liter tank and they had a beautiful rich red color. They are very territorial and hostile toward others of the same kind and other types of fish.

The Red Devil requires a tank of 50 gallons or more, with plenty of room to swim as well as stones for hiding. Because it is a digger, it is best to put the rocks on the bottom of the tank and not stacked.

Red Devils (Cichlasoma labiatum) basically hate everybody, and declare about 100 gallons of space as their territory. They make great solo fish, but generally need huge tanks to have any chance at compatibility.

Be sure, however, that the other cichlids you have them in with are not real terrors, because the Jack Dempsey is not as aggressive as a red devil, green terror or the like. This fish is rough on plants, so consider keeping it with plastic plants.
