Origin and locale/variety: Nkhomo Reef--Malawi, Lake Malawi, East Africa
Size: Adults are usually 2.0 to 3.5 inches in aquarium environment.
The Red Empress is arguably one of the most attractive species available. It's also very common in the hobby and should be easily obtained. The base color will be purple or blue with various red, purple, blue, green, and aqua colored areas.
Purging the red empress mouthbrooder (Haplochromis similes) Wing releases the fry, and removes them into a separate tank for raising.
