Rhizomes
Plants in this category typically have a thick, horizontal stem from which leaves sprout on the top and roots on the bottom. The roots may grow in the aquarium substrate or may attach to driftwood or other furnishings in the tank.

Rhizome: A stem growing more or less horizontally near the surface of the soil or gravel and sometimes showing above it.
Ribs: Raised folds on the surface of a shell.
Ridge: Similar to ribs, but milder.

Rhizome - A plant organ which resembles a horizontal stem from which leaves grow. Anubias and Java Fern are common aquarium plants which grow from a rhizome.

Rhizome division
Comments:
A great first plant along with anacharis and java ferns due to how easy it is to care for.

Rhizome: The roots of some plants produce side-shoots. These plants can be propagated by cutting the rhizome into pieces. Be sure to include some leaves and some roots with the rhizome. Replant the cut sections along the surface of the substrate.

If you use a rhizome barrier, in the fall cut the rhizomes trying to grow over the barrier. Cut off new shoots from rhizomes whenever they come up in areas not wanted.

Propagation: The rhizome produces side shoots, but also divides itself, producing new plants
Availability: The Dwarf Anubias is readily available.

Larger-sized species have a rhizome, whereas smaller species are stoloniferous. All species are perennial or annual aquatic or marsh plants found in boggy flood areas or along the banks of stagnant or slow-flowing waters.

Anubias are similar to Java Ferns in that they grow off of a rhizome which must not be buried in the substrate. For best results, tie the rhizome to a piece of driftwood or rock, and the roots of the Anubia will soon anchor the plant.

The feather-like blades that extend from the branches that grow upright from the rhizome (runner) can easily identify the Feather species.

Anubias barteri attaches easily to rocks and driftwood but does not tolerate having its rhizome buried. Like the other Anubias species it can also have algae colonizing on its leave as the last for a long time on the plant.

Another method of reproduction is to divide the rhizome into segments. This will result in a number of plants from one and all should thrive.

After about a week, the roots will have grown sufficiently to allow the runner to be cut off. In the case of the Congo fern, this produces a rhizome that grows slowly, with new leaves appearing on it.

Reproduction Method: Can reproduce by splitting the rhizome
Comments: This plants does best in a larger aquarium with a loose substrate. For best results with this plant, an Iron rich fertilizer should be used for best results.
