Rusty Cichlids usually do well in brighter full spectrum lighting. Enclosure temperatures are usually kept between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 28 degrees Celsius). Water should have a pH level between 7.6 and 8.6.
Rusty cichlids are elongate fish that can grow up to about 11 cm. Juveniles and females are "rusty" brown color, while mature males have lavender purple hue.

The common name in America is "rusty cichlid". He chose to emphasize the violet, using the stem iodes / ioeides, violet-like in color. The Greek ios, rust, probably influenced his choice because the name seemed to reflect both rust as well as violet.
