Aquarium Saltwater dipSalvini Cichlid

Salvini Cichlid
The Salvini Cichlid, also known as the Tricolor Cichlid and the Yellow Belly Cichlid, is a brightly colored cichlid from the lakes and rivers of southern Mexico and northern Central America.

Salvinia
Salvinia is a small floating fern that grows in long chains of two oval leaves and a ``root-like'' third leaf. Easier to control than duckweed. Buy it at water garden supply stores, as it's too cheap for most aquarium shops.

Salvini cichlids readily spawn in the right environment and are model parents. Males have more pointed dorsal and anal fins, the upper edge of the male's dorsal being bright red.

Salvinia is a floating plant a lot like Duckweed only much larger. It has thick hairlike roots that provide a lot of area for tiny organisms to grow (fish food) and excellent hiding places for fry.

Salvini Cichlid
Species name: Cichlasoma salvini
Synonym: Cichlasoma tenue; Heros salvini; Heros triagramma ...

Salvini Cichlids are very beautiful and are often kept as display fish or pets. These lovely fish are interesting to observe in the wild or in captivity. In the wild, Salvini Cichlids are often found in murky waters with little visibility.

A salvini doesn't need a large tank, because this fish isn't a big fish. A full grown male salvini will usually reach a maximum length of 6 inches. The females usually grow to around 5 ½ inches.

In the centre of the tropical house is a tropical display garden, with a double pond.

Try a floating fern such as Salvinia instead of this one. Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae (``micro sword'') 64-77F. This plant sold under this name is probably L. braziliensis, a South American Liaeopsis.

Although he chases my salvini (which only about an inch long! HAHA) It was suppose to be a feeder but he's lasted over two months now and there is no signs of him leaving anytime soon!

Really pretty fish.

Well, I tried to make the best of it, and after taking breakfast in the hotel we went to the Auction hall where our Greek friends were already looking at a pretty Cichlasoma salvini. Yes, the "cichlid lust" virus was also among us! ...

Peat-filtered water, a 2 gallon tank, and floating plants such as Java moss and Salvinia are all that are required for a successful spawn. A floating plastic tube of short length or similar may be used for the male to build his compact bubblenest in.

In it I had a large pillow of Java moss, 1/4" of peat moss on the bottom of the tank instead of gravel, a layer of Salvinia at the surface, and a small Tetra sponge filter.

It is now in a 72 inch tank with 2 red devils, 1 salvini, and 1 convict and they all are doing great. Initially the big red devil took a fight with the fh, but after some jaw locking they are fine now. I really enjoy my new priced possession.

Examples of floating plants are Pistia stratiotes (Water Lettuce -- see photo), Salvinia auriculata (Butterfly Fern), Riccia, and Java Moss.

Potential tank mates include Large Plecostomus and other large Neotropical Cichlids such as Texas Cichlids, Jack Dempseys, and Salvini. White Tip Sharks, Tinfoil Barbs, Black Barred Tiger Fish, Large Clown Loaches, and some large Eels.

A typical setup is to have a 5 cm layer of peat on the bottom, a low pH and soft water, subdued light and a little bit of filtration(usually sponge fiters). For plants some floating plants(Pistia, Salvinia) and javamoss are usefull and nice.

duckweed, azolla or salvinia) and algae. When feeding Goldfish pellets or flakes, do not feed it floating on the surface, it must sink before it's safe for the Goldfish to eat it.

I heavily plant the tanks with elodia for plant cover and as a source of food (though they don't destroy it like other fish may) and a covering with floating plants such as Salvinia natins to stop the fish jumping out and also helps to naturally ...
