Scales
The deeper place Dermis of the skin is made up of connective Fibroblasts, Collagen and blood vessels. The scales of a fish lie in pockets in the Dermis and come out of the connective tissue.

Scales: Thin, small, overlapping plates which protect a fish's body. Scales grow in regular concentric patterns and can be used to determine the age and life history of a fish.
Scaly: Covered with thin platelike layers or pieces.

Scaleless fish - Scaleless fish, particularly Cordydoras, are very sensitive to salt. Even a small amount could harm them. Tetras are also somewhat sensitive to salt.

Scales sticking out - The scales on the fish stick out at a right angle to the fish's body.
Red Sores - Where are the sores? What do they look like? Are they red on the outside, or white on the outside and red on the inside?

Scale: Small places which are scattered throughout the body of the fish. They are the primary source of protection for most fish.

Dropsy (Ascites)
Dropsy is more of a sympton than an actually disease yet, and is quite common. Most associated with a bacterial infection (cause could be wide - poor water conditions are often the culprit.

Limescale and soap scum do not occur in soft water areas. Soft water runs over impervious rock such as granite or filters through leaf litter or peat so does not pick up as many minerals.

The scale eaters (e.g., Plecodus straeleni, a Lake Tanganyika cichlid) have teeth and body shape that enable them to attack and remove scales from other fishes. They are rarely kept in home aquaria for this very reason.

The scale bar in the upper left corner of Figure 4 represents a distance of 5 μm. At this magnification, the skeletal surface appears as a series of aragonite crystal columns approximately 3-4 μm in diameter.

TIME SCALE OF NITRIFICATION
The process of cycling a tank can be speeded up by seeding. This entails the addition of nitrifying bacteria to the tank. Gravel or other media from an already established tank is one source of this seed.

The Scales of a fish can be categorised into four basic types: placoid, cosmoid, ganoid and cycloid.
Placoid scales are found mainly on sharks, rays and their relatives and are similar in structure to that of teeth. They are rectangular in shape.

Being scaleless fish, they are rather prone to ich and skin parasites. When using medications, please be careful. Like other loaches, they will react very quickly to strong dosage. Use only half of the recommended dosage.

The pH scale is used to measure the degree to which your aquarium’s water is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. The scale ranges from 0 to 14 with 0 being the most acidic, 7 being neutral, and 14 being the most basic. Most fish thrive in a pH of 6.

The pH scale is expressed as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration ranging from 0 [high concentration of hydronium ions (H+) = acidic] to 14 [high concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) = alkaline/basic].

Kelvin - Scale used to measure the colour of light a tube emits.
L
Larvae - This is the first stage a fish/invertebrate goes through after hatching.

But using 2 scales complicates things unnecessarily, so it's more common to put both of them together in a single scale - pH. Now, instead of going only from 0 to 7, it goes from 0 to 14.

Note : some scaleless and smaller fishes may not be able to tolerate similar dosage for larger fishes, it's best to reduce the dosage to half (read the medication instruction carefully, the dosage recommended may vary).

The Pim Pictus is a scaleless catfish and so seems to be more susceptible to White Spot (Ich) than many other catfish. Make sure when you are purchasing this fish that it and its tankmates are entirely free of White Spot and that they are well fed.

The pH scale ranges from 0 - 14, with 7 being neutral. From the center 7 the scale measures the alkalinity (above 7.0) or acidity (below 7.0) on a logarithmic scale.

In either case, no matter what chemical is used for treatment, Clown Loaches (and all other scale-less fish) should ONLY get HALF to three-quarter strength treatment.

Commercial water softening resin "pillows" can be used on a small scale, but are not effective for larger amounts of water.

Before and during spawning males are very aggressive towards the female what results in damage to the female's scales and fins. Yet the female does not seem to mind and doesn't leave the nest.

The scales when viewed under the right light have an iridescent gold or brass look to them. The males are usually slimmer and more colorful than the females. Tiger Barbs are also extremely playful and curious fish.

Each and every scale has a small black dot on it. The fins will usually have purple or darker color base with vibrant, bright blue lines running through them.

This brown shading in Gray Angels is often achieved through the shading of individual scales; many are gray with brown areas in the middle, and often the edges of each scale are brown.

Severums are considered to be medium to large on the scale of South American cichlids, growing to around 10 to 12" for males and 8 to 9" for females. This means that tank size is a big consideration when deciding to buy a Severum.

They are scaless like the puffers, and have a suction-like fin on their bellies which enables them to hold onto things like the side of your tank. They are small, but fast. Most of the time they are too fast for puffs.

pH is a water quality scale that measures the "potential" of "hydrogen" - the number of hydrogen ions in water. The scale ranges from 1 - 14. The lower the number, the more acidic the water is. The higher the number, the more alkaline the water is.

Determine the relative aggressiveness of each specimen you want to put together on a scale of one to ten by reading up on each and asking questions.

Cave and albino fish if kept exposed to high level uv lights have no ultraviolet blocking protiens or keratinous structure in the scales to reflect light, and they too may suffer cancers as a result of uv damage.

Small displays are perfect for animals and plants that would be lost in even typical small tanks.

Fish are aquatic vertebrates that are typically cold-blooded; covered with scales, and equipped with two sets of paired fins and several unpaired fins.

Scales should be intact, parallel with body (not sticking outwards) and no red blotches. No holes, ulcerations, or lumps. Species with translucent bodies, no inner appearing whitish areas.

The complete scale runs from 0 to 14. However, it is not a linear cycle - it is logarithmic.

It was originally referred to by the common name of 'Fine-scaled tigerfish' before D. pulcher and D. undecimradiatus were described, which share the finer scales (in comparison to D. quadrafasciatus and campbelli).

Clown loaches are very prone to disease since they have no scales. Ich is the most common ailment, and often they are seen in the pet store covered in ich spots (makes my blood boil).

Only the female will attach itself to the fish, underneath a scale usually deep into the muscle tissue with its powerful extensions on the sides of its anchor shaped head (hence the name anchor worm).

The Green Texas Cichlid is also known as the Pearlscale Cichlid. It should not be confused with Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum, the Texas Cichlid. The Green Texas Cichlid is considered to be an amiable fish.

They generally work on the basis of a change in the color of the water, which must be compared with a scale printed on the packaging.

At the other end of the difficultly scale, a very good choice, especially for those with a 20 gallon or larger aquarium, is the "Jurupari'' - Satanoperca leucosticta ( referred to in the hobby as Geophagus jurupari).
