Setae -Hairlike structures that can be found on various parts of a macroinvertebrates body. They may be single, in rows, or in clusters. Segment - A subdivision of the body.
The bristles are hollow, venom-filled setae which easily penetrate the flesh and break off if this worm is handled. They produce an intense irritation in the area of contact, hence the common name of the species.
One Family of polychaete worms, the Amphinomidae have spines, called setae, that have evolved to contain venom as a form of defense.
Small particles (less than 50 microns in diameter) in the water are filtered out by fine setae on the thoracic legs and moved along a groove at the base of legs to the mouth.
