Like all shell dwellers sand is the ideal substrate. If gravel is too large it can prevent them from doing what comes natural to them. To be able to burry their shell like is prefered by shellies they need sand.

Aquarium behavior: This fish should be treated as a shell dweller. They are capable of fending for themselves without being aggressive to tankmates. The entire genus of Altolamprologus is ideal for Tanganyikan community environments.

Lamprologus ocellatus is a type of shell dweller from Lake Tanganyika. It is a popular aquarium fish due to its small size, appearance, and intelligence.

First of all you will need an empty tank, like below. This is my old rekord 120 that was used until a few days before for Tanganyikan fish and some shell dwellers, the media was kept mature in a separate tank that the fish were put in.

Not for the community tank, keep with similar sized Tanganyikan cichlids, which are not overly aggressive, such as Julidochromis or larger shell dwellers.

Their presence in the tank actually calms the other cichlids. When they see them out in the open, they figure it must be safe. Even your shell dwellers will spend more time out of their hiding places with these fish present.
