Siltation: The accumulation of silt in the bottom of waterways or bodies of water.

 


Because of the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) and water hyacinth, deforestation causing siltation of water, and overfishing, many species of Lake Victoria cichlids have been wiped out or drastically reduced in the wild.

Increasing siltation of the river through past deforestation practices and obstruction of migratory routes through the construction of dams in the region may also have a negative impact on fish abundance in the river. Photo © Zeb S. Hogan.

Associated outcomes of agricultural development include erosion due to deforestation, which combined with increased run-off of nutrients, has led to nutrient enrichment and siltation of many smaller waterbodies in particular.
