Sometimes called a silver dollar, this fish is another harmless herbivore and should be kept in a shoal in a large aquarium. These fish can grow to a length of 6 inches.

Silver Dollars Species Quick Stats
Food: Feed them a diet of earthworm (sectioned) bloodworm, beefheart, and shrimp. They also like tropical flake food and spirulina flakes or sea weed salad.

Silver Dollars are small fish that are round in shape and silver in color, hence the common name of "Silver Dollar.

Silver dollars natively live in a tropical climate in the sides of weedy rivers. They prefer water with a pH of 5-7, a water hardness of up to 15 dGH, and an ideal temperature range of 75-82 °F (24-28 °C).

For this reason they are also known as Silver Sharks. Their silver coloration is distinct because their fins are lined in black. Some Bala Sharks will have white spots on them.

Comments: I was surprised by this new store in the Cloverly neighborhood of Silver Spring. The staff was knowledgable and eager to help with my aquarium algae problems.

This is the normal coloring of wild Angel. The body is white with 4 dark vertical bars running through it.

Silver Dollars (Metynnis and Myleus sp.) are also quite active and different enough that they tend to mix fairly well. There are a number of species, some of which do not get large enough for this application.

There are 3 types of silver dollars. One type is full silver, the most common type worldwide.

Silver Dollars love foods of all kinds. Often any flake, frozen, pellet, or small live food will suffice.
Breeding is not known.
Sexing can be accomplished by looking the the cheek area. Males may have an faint orange or red spot.

Junior (the Silver Arowana's name) has now happily exceeded 2 feet in size (> 60 cm) and is doing well even though he is a real "tank buster".

All it needs is a reasonable amount of light, water with nutrients in (such as those produced by any collection of fishes), and an absence of those fishes that will make a snack of it, such as Tinfoil Barbs or Silver Dollars.

The poor inhabitants encluded a MASSIVE plec (far too big for the tank), two corries and the last surviving - far to big- silver dollar.

White Clouds are brown with a red tail and a silvery white line down the side that shines in the light. They get to be 1 1/2" long.

In both cases the females exhibit brilliant red bellies that are banded by iridescent silver which runs into the dorsal fin. The females of each form also have yellow faces and cheeks.

There are many species of mollies, including the black molly, sailfin molly, balloon molly and silver molly. Mollies are not freshwater fish, but brackish fish meaning they require a small salt concentration in their habitat.

The silver colored juveniles grow slowly and take nearly three years to reach half their size and mature sexually. They then breed quite regularly after that. Malawi Blue Dolphins tend to breed when no other species are present in the tank.

I have a couple of silvers in the tank with my green puffers, and they never bother them. If you've seen what these fish eat, I don't blame my puffs! They are still attractive fish, especially the silver scats.

Dovii's are relatively easy to sex once they reach maturity, with females developing a more yellowish background colour as opposed to the silvery background of a male. Males will also develop impressive nuchal humps as they grow.

Also known as the tricolor shark or silver shark, the young bala shark is a staple item in most aquarium stores. However, this fish is a poor choice for most aquaria.

Gold, Silver, and Cosby Gouramies are also widely available and are simply artificial color varieties of the Blue Gourami. Blue Gouramies can get up to 6" long.

Herbivores, such as Plecos, African Cichlids, Pacus, and Silver Dollars, are plant eaters. They do well with staple flake foods and algae wafers. They can also be supplemented with finely chopped lettuce, spinach, zucchini, or green peas.

Silver-scaled Barbs such as the Tinfoil Barb (and Bala "Sharks") are also not as hardy and tend to not tolerate ammonia nearly as well.
