Production of gametes, eggs and sperm, is not a simple matter. It is biologically expensive and, of course, biologically necessary.

Well, bad news. I came home from work tonight and all the babies are gone. I'm guessing the female must have eaten them, because they are nowhere to be seen. I was afraid something like this would happen.
A brackish water fish, the "orange chromide" grows to a length of 4 inches. They spawn in shelters of seagrass so make sure you have plenty in your tank. These fish are hard to sex so its better to have 3 or 4 pairs to assure breeding.

I first acquired a pair of these fish in October 2006 with the aim of breeding them. The other two specimens from the shipment were housed in the Peruvian display tank at the LFS.

Once the proper conditions exist, it takes no effort to induce spawning. Condition the pair by feeding them a generous diet that includes live foods. Their colors will intensify as they prepare to spawn.

After the cave(s) have been introduced the male will spend some time inspecting and choosing an adequate location. To condition the pair, or trio, include live foods such as Mosquito larvae which may help induce spawning.
STEP 5: Spawning process
When a female is showing three or all of the signs, she is ready to be released. You should carefully take her out of the enclosure and place her away from the male in the tank.
Spawning :
In mature fish, breeding can be stimulated by a partial water change and a rise in temperature to between 80 and 82 degrees F. One sure sign that spawning is about to occur is the appearance of the pair's genital papillae.
Spawning usually takes place in pits dug into the substrate or in a cave if one is provided. Eggs generally number between 100 and 500.
Spawning will generally take place inside a plant pot, with the same procedure of most anabantids, the male "embracing" the female.
Spawning cherry barbs is easy except that the parents tend to eat their eggs, so plants or artificial spawning mops must be very thick in the breeding tank.

Spawning has been accomplished in the aquarium. Callichthys is a builder of bubblenests from plant parts, some bottom materials, and bubbles formed by a mouth secretion and air.
Spawning will only take place during the Spring. Thousands of eggs will appear on the substrate. Once spawning has occurred the female should be removed because only the male will care for the young.
Spawning is in typical anabantid fashion and the species is a bubblenest breeder.
Spawning occurs in brackish water. The eggs will be laid on the bottom, either on the substrate or on a flat rock. After the eggs are fertilized, the male will stay behind to guard them for approximately 7 days until the fry become waterborne.
Spawning takes place over moss or the eggs may be laid among plants. After hatching, usually about ten days, fry may be fed prepared live foods or brine shrimp.
The spawning tank can be a low aquarium (5 gallons to 20 gallons depending on the species) filled 3/4 full with clean, aged water and lined with a dense foliage about two inches thick.
After spawning, both the mother and the father will stay to protect and care for the eggs. The blue discus is a devoted parent and the adult fish should never be separated from eggs or young fry.
After spawning, the male will assume its paternal role diligently - watching over the nest and picking a fight with whomever comes near, including the female. Therefore, it is best to remove the female soon after all the eggs are laid.
An open spawner, the Red Devil Cichlid is not particular about its spawning substrate. Spawning will occur on horizontal, slanted, or vertical hard surfaces, with as many as 1,000 eggs being dropped at a time.
Breeding:Spawns in a similar fashion as B. splendens under floating leaves, but will also spawn in caves.
Kribensis spawn in typical cave spawner fashion. There is often a long courtship leading up to the spawning and the sight of a female krib curled sideways displaying her red swollen belly is a great fish keeping experience.
Substrate spawners are a little choosier about where they put the eggs. They lay eggs that attach to some sort of substrate. Plants, rocks, wood, and even the aquarium glass may be chosen as a spawning site.
Observed spawning habits: Males will show great interest in females which are "rounded" and in obvious spawning condition, following them closely in an interesting and ongoing aquarium "chase".
Breeding: Free spawner. A female can lay up to 500 tiny eggs near the surface between plants. The parents will eat the eggs even during spawning, and should be removed as soon as enough eggs have been laid.
During the pre-spawning period you can feed a wide variety of foods, including blackworms, grindal worms, fruit flies, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and frozen bloodworms (all are live except the frozen bloodworms).
(3) Open water spawners simply release their eggs with little regard to where the eggs end up. These species do not take part in brood care.

The tank I use for spawning most pencil fishes, measures 8 x 6 x 6 inches. Water is taken from each of the 'stock' tanks (GH 5 degrees pH 7). Java Moss is used as a suitable spawning medium and as a safe haven for the females.
cylindricus is a rock-dwelling, substrate spawner. Both in the wild and Neolamprologus cylindricusin the tank, cylindricus stay very close to the rocks.
The Zebra is a mouth brooder and the spawning process is intriguing. The male will establish a territory and its colors will become enhanced when it is ready to breed.
During spawning, females will grow an egg depositor near the anal fin. The Pink Convict Cichlid will lay their eggs in a dark hidden place and will care for the eggs and fry.

Very soft water, and a temp of 75°F is used to encourage spawning. Use dim lighting during spawning. The female will lay eggs on a flat surface. These fish spawn best in the evening, laying up to 500 eggs.
