Typological species A group of organisms in which individuals are members of the species if they sufficiently conform to certain fixed properties.

The habitats and wild populations of many species are disappearing forever. Populations of such easily maintained aquarium species as Skiffia francesae, Cynolebias whitei, and Barbus nigrofasciatus may already be extinct in the wild.

NON-FISH SPECIES
There are several animals that are kept in aquaria, that are not fish. Some of the common non-fish aquarium species are included here.

Species Specifics
As you probably already know, there are a great deal of different pufferfish out there. Aquarists have no doubt been confused at one point or another regarding the differentiation between them.

Species Guide
I have taken some different pictures and I decided to change the guide, with help from Micah Gates.

A "species tank" is not absolutely restricted to a single species for me. But for me it is restricted to a very small number of different species, each of those occupying different ecological niches.

This species of dwarf cichlid is quite easy to care for. P. pulcher will tolerate a range of water conditions well.

This species is without a doubt...gorgeous! The base color will be green, being darker towards the top of the body. Some oranges and pinks, and sometimes purples may blend into the base color. Each and every scale has a small black dot on it.

Fish Species Index
The ever-expanding Fish Index has now been re-organised into separate pages for each family, with an A-Z by common or scientific name option.

The Freshwater Species Profiles are sorted in three ways:

Keystone Fish Species:
Many fish species have been classified as keystone species in smaller bodies of freshwater, such as lakes, ponds and streams, as well as inland seas, and even in rivers.

The Clown fish species are also known as Anemone fishes, since they form symbiotic relationships with anemones. It is still not clear exactly how the Clown fish manages to stay out of harms way when hiding near the anemone.

At least some coral species have profoundly different rates of photosynthesis in polyp tissues and the coenosarc (connecting tissue between the polyps) - see Ralph et. al., 2002.

Anthias, Psuedoanthias, and associated species, are sub-members of the grouper family, which live in large schools and consist of males living within harems of numerous females.

Nymphea species (family Nymphaeaceae). These plants are sometimes known as pixie lilies. There are many species and varieties with heart shaped aquatic leaves. The leaves are very varied from bright green to dark red.

Species / Type:
Single-Species [General] fish do not require any additional tank-mates of the same species to maintain social balance.

Species Information
One of the smaller species of anabantids, they are often mistaken for cichlids. In the tank you should provide a weedy existence much like their habitat in the streams, ponds and rivers of Africa.

SPECIES:
Tea cup rays are really just young unclassified rays. I.e. too small to be formally id'd. The problem with these fish is that they are a lot harder to wean on to frozen and easy to feed foods then larger rays.

Species identification
There are five valid species of Datnioides - campbelli, microlepis, pulcher, quadrafasciatus and undecimradiatus.

Species
There are about 36 species in the family, classified in four genera (three according to some authors).

Species-Area Effect: A regular logarithmic relationship between the number of species in a confined geographic area (e.g., an island) and the area in which the species occur.

Species for the fish and invertebrate aquarium must be chosen carefully.

species (abbr. sp.; pl. species, abbr. spp.)
The basic unit in taxonomy, the conceptual underpinnings of which vary among taxonomists, and which is thusly open to wide interpretation. The taxonomic category below genus.

In species where the color patterns are a special feature, the patterns should conform to the expected "standard".
Unhealthy fish
The best way to avoid buying an unhealthy fish is to recognize the outward signs of illness.

If species are kept that usually live in calm waters, the filter should not cause a strong current. Details are mentioned in the descriptions of the individual species.

The species of Gagata usually imported in the aquarium trade is G. cenia (from northern India). However, the growing number of fish imported from Myanmar (Burma) means that Burmese species such as G. gasawyuh, and more rarely, G.

The species is also called monkey fish because it of its ability to jump out of the water and capture its prey. It usually swims near the water surface waiting for potential prey.

The species is also sometimes called Horsetail, a name which is better reserved to the Horsetails of genus Equisetum. These are unrelated to the water plant, though there is some resemblance in appearance.

This species from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay is an 'annual' with a life expectancy of under 1 year due to the seasonal drying out of its natural habitat and the way it has evolved to counter this.

This species of Killifish is an annual species. A breeding tank is ideal with a 2-3 inch layer of peat at the bottom. The fish will bury the eggs in the peat. After spawning, remove the peat that contain the eggs and press out any excess water.

Most species of Loricariids are peaceful and participate in very little active swimming, preferring to rest or slowly graze over the aquarium bottom.

This species likes a tank with open water for swimming, and floating and rooted plants for refuge.

This species of hermit is relatively popular because of its coloration, especially the orange and sky-blue eyestalks. Calcinus laevimanus gets its common name from the black and white pincers, and the white bands on the otherwise darker legs.

This species requires a large tank because of their large size.
As far as feeding they do best on a diet of live food, which can include bloodworms, brined shrimp, tubifex worms and fish fry.

This species inhabits fresh and brackish waters over its native and non-native range. Spotted tilapia do not tolerate cold waters well. Tilapia are biparental, substrate brooders. They are aggressive, especially towards conspecifics during spawning.

Some species of suckermouth catfish, however, do stay small enough for most beginners to keep. The Clown Plecos of the genus Peckoltia have alternating transverse bands of darker and lighter brown, tan, or yellow and generally stay under 4" long.

Pleco species can be quarrelsome amongst themselves and may be picked on by other fish due to their generally slow-moving nature. Provide a hiding cave for each Pleco and give them territories proportional to their size e.g. 10 gallons for a 3" fish.

Various species of Echinodorus:
Tolerate wide varieties of light and water conditions. Certain species are excellent for feature or center plants (Echinodorus bleheri), many species feature broad attractive leaves.

In most species complex movements of the thoracic appendages produce a constant current of water between the valves.
