Aquarium SpeciesSpecific Gravity

A species tank is an aquarium that contains one species of fish, in which the tank is tailored to meet the demands of a specific fish for its maximum benefit.

A "species tank" is not absolutely restricted to a single species for me. But for me it is restricted to a very small number of different species, each of those occupying different ecological niches.

Title: Creating a Tank for Natives, Part 1: Still- or Slackwater Species Tank
Summary: Based in Wisconsin, Brian catches and sells native North American fishes, particularly darters, and has written this series to advise beginners.

Species Tank: An aquarium where only one type of fish is kept.
Specific Capacity: Expresses the productivity of a well. Specific capacity is obtained by dividing the well discharge rate by the well drawdown while pumping.

Species Tank - Also Species Aquarium. One in which fish of only one species are kept. Compare with Community Tank.

Species tank or peaceful community tank, do not mix with fin-nippers
Temperature
23-29oC (73-84oF) ...

Care:Species tank, minimum 40 cm, well planted(including floating plants)with dark soil and some driftwood. Slowly flowing soft acidic water, flitration over peat, and a lowered waterlevel(15-25 cm).

A Tropheus species tank can be set up with the largest tanks in this category (100 liters), although a colony of 5-6 individuals is the maximum you can keep.

Company: species tank or with larger species
Water Parameters: 7-8 pH, 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, and about a table spoon of salt per gallon
Aquarium Setup: 45-55 gallons heavily planted with a semi-covering of floating plants.

Keeping in a species tank with a lot of javamoss and floating plants is not difficult. The fry would not be eaten by the parents, but possibly by its brothers or sisters.

Algae problems (??) *Good Points* Healthy fish (babies in species tanks??) Marine Fish (if the owner can keep marines then he must be good) Fish only (or even tropical only) stores, i.e.

These amphibians should be kept in species tanks only, and when more than one is kept the tank should be large and well-filtered. Fish small enough will be eaten, or fish too large to be eaten are likely to nibble on the Axolotl's gill feathers.

The American flagfish is often ignored by both the dealer and the aquarist since they do not show bold coulurs - as to behaviour they are most certainly a mono species tank fish.

Care and feeding: As each type of Killifish will have its own set of requirements, these fish are most often are kept in individual species tanks.

The Green Snakehead is easier to keep in a species tank. In a species tank, an individual may become friendly and even tame, taking food from the owner's hand.

an excellent article 10 years ago i kept varios species tanks of corries on racks in a spare bedroom i kept the room heated with a fan htr and placed bubblewrap on the walls the largest tanks were off the floor about 12" and were around 72/74f and ...

Like most cichlids, they are to be kept as a single species tank, or at least with fish of similar size and temperament. This species is usually found in the lower and middle sections of slow-moving rivers.

Falx can be kept in pairs or in communities (species tanks). Males can be territorial so in a twenty gallon aquarium I would not have more then two or three pairs.

Comments: Mollies like a little salt in their water are easier to keep in a species tank of their own. They seem to be prone to a variety of diseases when their requirments for warmth, salinity and higher pH are not met.

Adults of this species can be housed in a species tank as small as 30 gallons, although an aquarium of 55 gallons or larger would be preferable. Calloplesiops altivelis is a good candidate for the reef aquarium. However, beware! ...

Compatability: Many aquarists and most breeders keep Tropheus in species tanks because of their mannerisms. While these species tanks tend to work very well, they are not appealing to every aquarist.

Timid; This fish is quite peaceful in a species tank or in a community, althought the males can be nippy while competing for the attention of a female. It's suggested to keep these fish in no less than groups of six fish, preferably more.

While they are generally peaceful towards tankmates that are too large to be eaten (this despite their battery of sharp teeth), they are best kept in a species tank, as they can be somewhat skittish.

Because of this it's best to keep them in a 60-80cm species tank, or combined with small peaceful fish that have similar requirements. A large school of this fish should be purchased, best 10 or more.

They do best in a species tank, or with other similarly sized aggressive fish. Dempsey Cichlids get quite aggressive, and stake out there territory. They are especially territorial when spawning.

The Clown Pleco aka Ringlet Pleco makes a good tankmate for small to medium sized cichlids, in a community tank or even a species tank for breeding attempts.

If you want to parent raise the fish I strongly urge you to keep them in a species tank with no other fish of any sort.

The glass catfish is relatively difficult to keep, but if its basic conditions are met this fish makes an interesting addition to a community tank - or alone in a single species tank.

A species tank works best, and it can be bred using a single pair or a group (this is known as flock spawning). The breeding tank should be planted very heavily.

A lively bottom-dweller, it does best in a species tank with open areas at the bottom for swimming and resting. The depth of the aquarium need only be 12", but a large bottom area is needed. Soft sand and floating plants are greatly appreciated.

You will still find a lot of forms of tropical fish species tank that may be your current perfect preference, such as archer sea food, swordtails, platies, and lots of various other attractive as well as eye-catching fishes.

Then you also have to decide whether you want to set up a species tank (only one kind of fish) or a community tank ( More than one species of compatible fish together).

If they will not and you have a species tank (meaning that only one species of fish is kept in the tank) then the babies should be fine.

Minimum Tank Size and/or Tank Type= A 51G (200L) monospecies tank, with a 2-4" (5-10CM) layer of fine sand on the bottom, a dim light filtered through floating plants, sufficent hiding places, ...

A few fish ignore their eggs or fry, and so can be bred in a species tank. White cloud minnows can breed this way, and many killifish will at least ignore the eggs. Baby killies are fair game, though. Guppies will also often ignore babies.

Experts recommend this fish be kept in a species tank, alone or with others of its species. It does not play well with others, so if it must be kept in a community tank, the other fish must be of similar size or they will be terrorized and/or eaten.

There are variations but the above covers the three main categories pretty well. A further possibility would be a species tank for instance or a biotope tank (e.g. only animals from a certain region - Red Sea for example).

Also known as the Argentine pearl fish, this South American genera of killifish is a substrate spawner. The Cynolebias nigripinnis should be kept in a species tank.

Many Apistogramma species are very sensitive to changes in water chemistry. Apistogramma are best kept in species tanks with plenty of cover (in the form of plants and driftwood).

tank of at least 75 gallons with plenty of rocks for territories and a medium-sized gravel planted with hardy plants. This fish will become aggressive towards smaller fish, so it is important to keep it with similar-sized fish, or in a species tank.
