Sponge Filters
These are also an internal form of biological filtration. Water is pulled through a sponge and then pumped back into the water column. As the water flows through the sponge bacteria grows, as with the UGF.
Sponge filter. This type can be used as either the primary filter, or as a pre-filter for another filtration system. Air tubing is connected to the sponge on one end and to an air pump sitting outside the aquarium on the other end.
Sponge Filters - Though not recommended as a main tank filtration system, sponge filters are effective and commonly used in hospital tanks and small breeding tanks that contain tiny fry.
Sponge Filters
A sponge filter is usually as simple as a sponge attached to a riser tube. Water is drawn through the sponge and out the other end of the tube, either by airlift or by powerhead.

Many breeders use a bare tank with only a sponge filter as filtration. Debris and extra food are easily seen and siphoned off daily. Frequent water changes can be done on the tank, as there are no other fish around to stress.
The tank is best filtered by a corner sponge filter. The tank should have some gravel. After you notice that the female is getting fat, remove the male. His job is done. Let the female do her stuff, and you will have baby platys soon.
As far as filtration goes, a sponge filter should be used to handle the biological load, and an outside power filter to pick up any debris that may be in the water.
