The fish attains a 'standard length' (tip of nose to base of tail) of 100 mm (approx. 4 inches), although they are capable of reproduction at the much smaller size of 40 mm. The male, as in most Rainbowfishes, is a little larger than the female.
macrophthalmus have reached 6" standard length (SL), and there are indications that a 6 foot long, 125 gallon tank will not be adequate in the near future.
At 2" (5 cm) SL (standard length) A. sp. Mamoré males should have extended front dorsal fin lappets. A. sp. Mamoré doesn't have a caudal spot either. Nor does it have a red pectoral spot.
The South American FW puffer is neither tiny nor jumbo, reaching about 3 inches (standard length, without the caudal fin) if not crowded, and fairly round-bodied. The real captive size of this species is uncertain.
The Bearded Cory is perhaps the longest of all the known Corydoras species, with adult males attaining a standard length (tip of snout to the caudal peduncle) of 100 mm.
They use the same 2-pins on each end configuration, and come in the same standard lengths; in fact, some sizes are easier to get into and out of aquarium light units because of their smaller diameter.
The Mayan cichlid reaches a maximum standard length of 280 mm (Conkel 1997). It is native to the Atlantic slope of tropical Mesoamerica (Central America), ranging from eastern Mexico southward to Nicaragua (Miller 1966).
