Stingrays have grown in popularity just recently, and young specimens may cost upwards of 100 dollars. A lively bottom-dweller, it does best in a species tank with open areas at the bottom for swimming and resting.

A stingray tank only needs to be moderately tall, say 45-50cm/18-20" but width and length must never be compromised. I suggest an aquarium of 120cm/48" long by 60cm/24" wide as a minimum.

FRESHWATER STINGRAYS
A Few words on origin, evolution, and original biotopes: Freshwater stingrays, as odd as it may seem, are much closer - from an evolutional point of view - to Pacific rays than to their counterparts living in the Atlantic.

The motoro stingray is one of the most fascinating creatures you can keep! They are said to be hard to keep and I would agree that they are not for the beginner.

Round Stingray
The Round Stingray is also known as the California Stingray. It is a bottom dwelling fish, with a brown body and yellow spots. The tail spine is venomous, but is only used for protection.

Freshwater Stingray (Potamotrygon laticeps): Eh? I could actually have a freshwater stingray, you are thinking, and you would be right in that assumption - but they are very rare and many have had difficulty in breeding them in captivity.

If you sell sensitive marine species such as sharks, stingrays, certain species of butterfly fish, ribbon eels, or dragonets (and the list goes on) to the wrong aquarium, be prepared to eat your profit when the customer walks in with a dead fish.
