subgenus (pl. -era) ...

This subfamily includes very many species. Among these species, some are very popular in the aquaristic community.

The balitorines (subfamily Balitorinae), or Chinese plecs are the most commonly seen. These have a flat body, underslung mouth and an adhesive organ on the belly formed from their fused pelvic fins.

The members of the subfamily Liopropomini, known commonly as reef basslets, are highly desirable serranids that are well-suited to the smaller reef aquarium.

The family Alestiidae was a subfamily of the Characidae until they were given family status in 1998. This family includes all of the African tetras. Like the Characins, Alestiids range in size from 1.5cm (less than 1 inch) to 150cm (5 feet).

This unusual Asian cichlid forms the subfamily Etroplinae with the members of the genera Ptychochromis from Madagascar.

They are traditionally ascribed to the subfamily named Oxudercinae. In the wild, you will find Mudskippers in tropical and subtropical areas affected by tidal waters, e.g. mangrove forests and mudflats.

(2003) Subfamily Loricariinae (Armored Catfishes). In Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America. Edipucrs, Porto Alegre pp. 330-350.

Clownfish, or anemonefish, are of the subfamily Amphiprioninae of the family Pomacentridae. They average 3 inches in length. Most are brightly colored orange fish with white stripes on the head or side of the body.

They are within the Anthiinae subfamily along with many species of Anthias. However, the Highfin Perchlets within the genus Plectranthias resemble hawkfishes more than Anthias.
