Substratum: The many different layers of substrates found in nature or in the aquarium.
Subtropical: Refers to the portion of the temperate zone closest to the equator.

Lastly, I painted the outer three (3) backsides of the tank with dull black paint and this was the final result.
The three (3) sides (back, right and left) painted black, along with the rock piles give a natural and deep look.

They are found in both worm and cold salt waters, where it makes it's home by burrowing into the local substratum, rock, sand, etc. From these burrows it rarely ventures forth, with the exception of to mate and relocate.

_Cichlasoma managuense_ is a monogamous, biparentally custodial open substratum spawner. Its spawning behavior, as observed in captivity, is typical of that of its genus.

This system is similar to undergravel filtration in that it uses the substratum as the filter medium.

This means they either lay the eggs on some portion of the substratum, (including pits dug in the sand, leaves, and flat rocks), or they take the eggs and fry into their mouths to protect them from predators.

The care for the fry is much like that of the monogamous substratum spawners of America, except for the fact they start out in a shell. N.

Encrusting: Crust-like, thin, flatten against substratum; said of the vegetative habit of some green, brown, and red algae.
Endcap: A water resistant socket for fluorescent lamps.

Gg. rhabdotus is known to be a simple substratum spawner. The other two members of the rhabdotus complex are Gg. meridionalis and Gg. setequedas.

Additionally, the horseface loach buries itself in the bottom substratum (if silt or fine sand); the longnose loach does not. The horseface loach is fast moving; the longnose is rather slow.
