Taxonomy

Aquarium Tateurndina OcellicaudaT-Bar Cichlid

Taxonomy or systematics is the science of classifications. There are two divisions: Numerical, which reorders groups along arbitrary lines; such as the Dewey Decimal System; and Biological, which deals with the classification of whole organisms.

With regard to apistos, most of the people studying them were ichthyologists only interested in taxonomy. In the 1930s the first of the German of the combination ichthyologists/hobbyists appeared on the scene. This was Ernst Ahl.

[edit] Taxonomy
This large genus of characins includes over 100 species.[1] The systematics of Hyphessobrycon is still largely unresolved.[2] Six groups within this genus have been recognized based off of color patterns alone.

Taxonomy provides the most informative and efficient way of researching tropical fish species. This is because different species in the same family often have similar environmental requirements, behavior, and diets.

Remember that taxonomy is terribly imprecise. Generally you can expect species within a genus to be capable of inter-hybridization, but many genera can hybridize as well! ...

But the taxonomy is highly uncertain. They are largely tropical. There are a few temperate, with no cold-water species known to date, and they are worldwide in distribution but with the majority in the southern hemisphere.

Taxonomy within this genus is always changing, as new species are being discovered and old ones split up. Like many other species, Nothobranchius kafuensis is quite variable. It comes in 3 main forms: red, blue, and intermediate.

Fish don't get quite as hung up on their taxonomy - or even appearances - as we humans do.

Many (not all, I am sure) marine fishkeepers know little about the biology, taxonomy or reproduction of their fish. Ask the same questions to a freshwater enthusiast and they'll often be able to tell you about it in great detail.

Genus: Plural: genera. In the taxonomy classification, the genus is the category ranking below a family and above a species.

I suppose that I shouldn't do this but it is how I think of them and I doubt that what I write here will influence anyone who studies Apistogramma seriously as I am the first to admit that taxonomy and species identification are not my strength.
