The Tiger Shovelnose catfish is a very large and a powerful predator. Like other large catfish, it has many large barbels that it uses to locate food and find its way around in dark and muddy waters.

PD: This catfish has an elongated body and a long snout. Its mouth is large and looks like a duck-bill.

Before I bought the pleco I had a tiger shovelnose catfish and in one night they destroyed him. They bit his fins, his whiskers and actually took half his face including an eye.

Red Tailed Catfish x Tiger Shovelnose Catfish - will grow larger than both parents so expect a fish around 4 ft long! Not for beginners or those without large indoor tropical ponds over 3785.4 Litres (1000 US G.).

This exhibit features arowana, arapaima, tiger shovelnose catfish, piranha, and many others, as well as the red tail catfish (Phractocephalus hemiliopterus) and what appears to be a pacu (Colossoma macropomus) shown above.

Little is known about the breeding habits of the Tiger Shovelnose Catfish, but it is speculated that the females have a fuller stomach and overall shape.

This species is by far the most popular representative of the Pseudoplatysoma genus in the aquarium hobby, where it is most often sold under the name tiger shovelnose or tiger shovelnose catfish.
