An Air-driven Reverse-flow Undergravel Filter
Okay it's like this:
I built it for a thirty gallon tank. I started with a drop ceiling "egg crate" from the home center. I glued marbles on the bottom for legs.
Undergravel Filter (UGF)
The UGF has been used for decades by hobbyists with great success. Unfortunately, this filter gets a lot of bad press by hobbyists who simply do not understand the basic concept and necessary maintenance behind UGFīs.
Undergravel Filter. This type usually comes with the aquarium kits available at pet stores. It is made up of slotted plates that cover the floor of the tank, and has uplift tubes built in to each plate.
Undergravel Filter: This filter provides both mechanical and biological filtration. It uses a few long, plastic tubes attached to a perforated plate on the bottom that is covered with gravel to pull water through the gravel.
Undergravel filters are the most common type of biological filter and work by pulling water down through a bed of gravel at the bottom of the aquarium and pulling it up through the uplift tubes.

An undergravel filter is made up of a plate that sits below the gravel bed. In each corner of the aquarium there is a clear pipe attached to the under gravel filter plate, usually with an air stone inside the tube or a powerhead on the top.

Aerated water is the term that is given to mixing the output of an air pump with water in a chimney such as the riser stem of an Undergravel filter or the stack from an internal box or sponge filter. When air is bubbled into a riser stem.

I thought of a new way to employ Jaubert's system in an aquarium without a surface-skimming overflow.
One word of warning: if you use an undergravel filter, it may suck your fertilizer back into the tank instead of keeping it with the bottom of the gravel. Dupla makes special laterite balls which can be used in an UGF (though expensive).
Large Power Filters: Before the invention of the undergravel filter, people used large, bulky power filters to cultivate beneficial bacteria. These original power filters were gigantic, compared to the modern hang-on power filter.
This means chemical, biological, and mechanical filtration - no undergravel filters (UGF). There are a lot of types of filters out there but not all of them are appropriate for a Betta.
I couldn`t find him for quite a long time, then I saw him in the tube of the undergravel filter!! I panicked a bit, but I got him out and he was fine. BUT quite a bit of gravel went into the tube.
