One of the coolest and useful aquarium products is the Python Aquarium Vacuum.

Vacuum: Can be used to remove water during a water change (syphon), and can clean the gravel and remove wastes.

Vacuuming techniques do vary with substrate particle size (4, 5 ,6). This equipment is designed for standard aquarium gravels. Larger "pea gravels" from many sources are too large to be vacuumed well.

Vacuuming the substrate for leftovers before they decay is not extreme. Nor is moderating food input extreme in my view. Cloudy water of whatever color is likely to be self-limited and to clear without intervention.

Vacuuming all of the uneaten food and waste will also help to counter the tendency for the pH to drop over time.

Vacuum the gravel bed. If there is uneaten food lying around (from your old feeding habits) or if you stir the gravel and clouds of detritus occur, this may be the source of an ammonia problem.

Use a gravel vacuum to syphon water from the gravel of your tank. At the same time this collects all the solid waste that collects at the bottom. Syphon the water into the spare buckets or containers that you prepared earlier.

Pellets can go bad easily so bad storage can cause deteriotion. Different packaging also makes a difference, whether they are sealed in vacuum (vacuum packed), sealed in airtight seals or just plastic shrink wrap.

Aquariums with undergravel filters usually require weekly water changes and thorough gravel vacuuming. Consider adding another filter that employs more efficient mechanical filtration. A canister filter or power filter offers an effective solution.
