The genus Vallisneria was named in honour of Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730) by the "Father of Taxonomy" Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) and he described the species Vallisneria spiralis in 1753.

Vallisneria spiralis being used by black widows. Several of these plants are connected by runners under the gravel.

Vallisneria spiralis:
Suggested for background placement, good choice for new installations & hardwater aquariums.
Aponogeton crispus:
Attractive olive green color, rapid growth.

The tank's Vallisneria spiralis and Cryptocoryne affinis were replanted in the new substrate along with some new sword plants from Twyla and the Java fern, Anubias, and Ludwigia from the smaller tank.

Most of the living plants I've tried to keep with them were also eaten, but I've found one that they leave alone: jungle val (Vallisneria spiralis). One side of the tank has a thick stand of val planted in individual clay flower pots.

The plants in this tank are Vallisneria spiralis and Ceratophyllum demersum, which are the only locally available plants which are actually found in Lake Malawi. I am still on the look out for Potamogeton schweinfurtthi.

Some are easier to take care of than others. The more hardy aquarium plants include the Java Fern, Hygrophila polysperma and Vallisneria spiralis.
You will need to check out a couple of things before embarking on your live plant adventure.
